![]() el natural 2012 Rare Gallery presents The Natural, new sculptures from Johnston Foster from May 24 through June 21, 2012. There will be a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday May 24 at 547 West 27th Street #514, New York. This is Foster’s fifth solo show with the gallery. His work is made up of fragments he puts together to create…things…and stuff. He regroups other things and stuff into new things and stuff. That is about the long and short of it (I hope that wasn't too technical). In the past the stuff might have been plastic but these days he is leaning toward the organic and the earthy tones such materials provide. Foster received his BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University (Go Spiders!) and his MFA from Hunter College. He has been featured in a number of group and solo shows around the country. He is currently participating in a major group exhibition at one of my favorite museums, the Museum of Art/Fort Lauderdale. Several of his shark sculptures are featured on the back of the exhibition catalog. He has many other shows upcoming. ![]() Creatures of Saintly Disguise 2012 Jennybird Alcantara’s Creatures of Saintly Disguise, a solo exhibition of new work, begins at Varnish Fine Art, 16 Jessie St., #C120 San Francisco, on June 9. The work is a surreal mix of critters and plants and fairytales and a sort of ongoing story woven by Alcantara. I have seen her work here and there and it always stops me. This exhibition will have some large oil works by the artist in addition to her usual, smaller fare. There will also be a reception, with the artist, from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday June 9. I wish I could go and ask her to paint stuff from MY favorite fairytales. This is the artist’s second show with the gallery and it focuses on the “saints” in Alcantara’s world. The artist received her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Her work has been exhibited in the USA and Europe and you may have seen it in number of the more interesting art magazines; Hi Fructoz, Juxtapoz, Raw Vision, Art Doll Quarterly etc. You should see this exhibit. Buy a painting. You can afford it. ![]() I interviewed some of the artists responsible for these works at Wynwood Walls during Art Basel. Unfortunately I had my FINGER over the microphone on these interviews so they basically sound like the parents from an old Peanuts cartoons (with some in Spanish) I apologize for my idiocy but thought I would, finally, post this anyway just for the images. Wynwood Walls is certainly worth a visit if you are in Miami.
Fabulous artist and fascinating gentleman, Alexander Kaletski, is the subject of an exhibition and screening at Bonbright Gallery in West Hollywood. There will be an opening and a cocktail reception. You have to RSVP by Tuesday, May 15.
![]() Jason Willaford’s Signs Of Life is the subject of an exhibit at Boltax Gallery, 21 north ferry road Shelter Island, New York, from May 25 through June 24, 2012. There will be an artist's reception Saturday May 26, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. Willaford’s work focuses on the things disappearing so quickly we barely have a chance to watch them vanish. Billboards are one of these in Willaford’s eyes (Most folks in Florida would argue they are not disappearing quite fast enough). He also approaches quilting—using the idea to show his wor in some cases. Find out more about Willaford and his work HERE. ![]() Interference-Gold Yellow Red Bicha Gallery In London presents Signals, a new exhibit of abstract paintings by Colin McCallum. The exhibit runs from May 25 to June 17, 2012 at 7 Gabriel's Wharf, South Bank, London. There will be an opening reception from 6:30 to 8:30 May 24, 2012. The works are luminous, metallic and bold using contrasting colors and a deceptive simplicity to refer to the visual overload in our consumer society. His paintings are, in a sense, the packaging of our modern world. See more of these engaging works HERE. ![]() FEAST Projects has a new space and they are inaugurating it with a performance, Five- Hong Kong, by Rashaad Newsome on 18 May 2012, 7PM to 9:30 p.m.. at No.2, G/F, Harbour Industrial Centre, 10 Lee Hing Street, Ap Lei Chau, Hong Kong. RSVP essential-- rsvp@feastprojects.com or +852 2553 9522 ![]() John McAllister’s Duskbright Bellows is at Richard Telles Fine Art, 7380 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles from May 12 to June 16, 2012. There will be an opening reception Saturday May 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. This is McAllister’s first solo exhibit with the gallery. He has previously had solo exhibitions at James Fuentes LLC, New York and at Ribordy Contemporary, Geneva in 2011. He has also appeared in group exhibits at David Kordansky Gallery, Los Angeles. His work is in numerous significant collections. He lives in Brooklyn. The release lists influences ranging from Matisse to Frank Stella (with a nod to Bonnard as well). He often employs pictures within pictures. Curiously he also does no studies. His work is from scratch. And do not be fooled by the list of “influences” he channels none of these in a direct way. ![]() Candice Smith Corby’s work will be the subject of an exhibition, Fortified, at Ellen Miller Gallery, 38 Newbury Street, Boston from May 11 to June 9. 2012. There will be a reception with the artist Saturday, May 12, 3-5 pm. Corby’s work confront the comforts—and tension—in domestic life. She casts an eye, in particular on acquired roles of women. Her work is influenced by kid’s games, roll playing and employs textiles. Furniture is arranged in odd configurations and quilts or blankets are used to envelop these. This conjures images of all the “forts” I built as a youngster (hence the exhibition’s name). For more information head HERE. |
