Dastan's Basement (Tehran) showed these works at Untitled Miami Beach 2017.

Artists working in Iran work within a system that has certain  restrictions; to put it mildly. I would love to write more about these artists (which were not named at the fair) but the Dastan's Basement website is not currently online.

You can find out more at the Dastan Gallery site.

Horton Gallery (New York) showed work by Clare Grill at Untitled Miami Beach 2017. Grill, a Chicago artist, now lives in New York City. She holds an MFA from Pratt.

Pony is oil paint on linen. She started working in figurative paintings and landscapes. Her newer work (which you can see by clicking the gallery link above) is of a different sort. There are still figures but the work can hardly be called figurative.

Find out more about the artist at www.claregrill.com.

Gamma Galeria (Guadalajara) showed a site specific multi-media piece by Thiago Martins de Melo at Untitled Miami Beach 2017.

The piece, Deus Cortado, is painting, sculpture and stop motion video. The dimensions vary, presumably in relation to the site. It is a startling and provocative piece.

The artist has an interesting background with an MA in Psychology rather than the standard MFA. He lives and works in Brazil.

Vigo Gallery (London) showed work by Jordan Nassar at Untitled Miami Beach 2017. Nassar, a New York native, still lives and works in the city. He has a BA from Middlebury College and is the co-founder of Cassandra Press.

Printing, fabric, t-shirts are all part of his art. One of the, quite neglected, art forms in contemporary art IS the t-shirt. Innumerable artists have worked in fashion. The t-shirt is, perhaps, seen as the "low end" fo that world. Yet, how many pieces of high fashion does any of us recall?

Now think of stand out t-shirts from throughout your life.

Of course these pieces are not t-shirts but they are on fabric. I am unsure as to the medium as it wasn't listed at the booth. Hopefully we can find out a wee bit more about Jordan and his work.

Henrique Faria (Buenos Aires) showed work by Mauro Guzmán at Untitled Miami 2017.

Silver and gold with hints of black and spooky imagery infuse these works. After I say these pieces I asked myself this question; would you look at these pieces if they didn't have the accoutrements hanging next to them. What if they were just the paintings?

This is something I often ask when I see paintings that add multi-media in a similar fashion. Is the artist "making up" for something?

Here the answer is a resounding no. For me each painting is compelling in itself, each piece makes you want to look closer. The trick is that the added media, the hanging bat for one, draw you to the pieces from a distance. These are cleverly put together.

Choi&Lager Gallery (Cologne) showed work by Rose Wylie and Dale Lewis at Untitled Miami Beach 2017.

Wylie's work has been shown in innumerable museum shows over the past decade. She works with oil (mostly as far as I have seen) and in drawing. Art book publisher,  Lund Humphries,  are planning a monograph of Wylie's work. The book is to be "curated" (my term) by Tate curator, Clarrie Wallis. Read more about the artist at this piece in The Guardian.

Lewis often uses oil, acrylic and spray paints in his work.  Murals reflecting the contemporary urban environment feature prominently in his collected works. While the style is obviously different there is something classical about his presentation. They call to mind religious work from the era between the Medieval and the Rennaissence. Imagine priests and saints instead of modern humans. He lives in London.

ADN Galeria (Barcelona) showed work by Marcos Avila Forero at Untitled Miami Beach 2017.  Forero lives in Paris and mostly works in video but this piece in wood.

Yet there is something cinematic about it isn't there? There is a negative to the positive.

His videos have been shown at Museo de Arte Moderno (Medellín, Columbia) and Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris). Forero received a  Hermès grant, won best best video-installation prize at LOOP Art Fair (2014). In 2017 he was part of the Venice Biennale's main exhibit, Viva Arte Viva.

Andrew Rafacz (Chicago) showed work by John Dihie at Untitled Miami Beach 2017. These pieces are both on oxidized walnut.

These ornate wood pieces tell a story. I am a little unsure of what the story IS but there is a story here nonetheless. I went to Untitled twice. Once I rushed through then I went back to ponder and these were some of the pieces I paused over.

Lora Reynolds Gallery (Austin) Showed Work By Lucas Simões At Untitled Miami Beach 2017

Lora Reynolds Gallery (Austin) showed work by Lucas Simões at Untitled Miami Beach 2017.

Simões new series, White Lies, is made from paper piles and concrete. The pieces are arranged in a grid where the paper
and concrete, like skyscrapers, mimic reaching to the sky or rolling to the ground in regular patterns. Unsurprisingly,Simões was an architect. As an architect (and former architect) Simões is fascinated by the promise and failures of modern architecture. The promise and failures have also hitherto, always been seen through a particular lens--the lens of white men.

Unique work individually and as a whole. Likewise aesthetically and philosophically. There is a drabness to these works but somehow that is part of why they are profound. They are fascinating pieces.
