Charles Quiles' first solo exhibition, Fais-Mois L'Amour, runs at ArtNowNY (548 W 28th Street 2nd Floor, New York) May 1 to 24, 2014. There will be a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday May 1, 2014.

Quiles, from Puerto Rico, splits time between New York and Stockholm and is known for his photos of a variety of celebrities and famous brands. His first book comes out next year.

These images are personal images and a sort of photo diary by the artist--they show his loved ones along with a variety of famous faces (don't worry, no James Franco). These particular images have never been shown previously.

William Powhida's "Unretrospective" Runs May 1 To June 7, 2014 At Platform Gallery (Seattle)

William Powhida's Unretrospective runs May 1 to June 7, 2014 at Platform Gallery (114 Third Avenue South, Seattle). There will be an artist's reception from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 3.

This is Powhida's third exhibit with Platform but the first with the gallery in six years. His text infused drawings and works on canvas deconstruct the art and financial worlds and the intersection of the two. His work has a sense of humor to be sure.

This exhibit also includes "republications" of earlier Powhida works produced in an painting village in Shenzhen, China. I suppose these are sort of...forgeries with the artist's consent.

The release I received had the artist musing on having a show where nothing was for sale but was told that would be...stupid. Stupid and economically infeasible are sort of the same thing.

David Walker's Swapping Souls With Strangers opens May 10, 2014 at Robert Fontaine Gallery (2349 NW 2nd Ave., Miami). There will be an opening reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday May 10. The exhibit runs through May 31. Walker is based in Berlin but is orginally from London. His medium is freehand spray paint portraits. This exhibit is his solo debut in the United States and consists of a dozen large works.

The pieces show Walker's multi-layered style. He uses abstract and scrawled lines to create his colorful portraits. There is something very "alive" about work by the best artists using spray paint in their work. It always calls to mind "street art." (a term I am personally getting tired of and let's not get into how art not on the street can be street art!). This is fine art using techniques often used by graffiti artists to be sure but it has a style that owes as much to abstract art and photo realism as anything else.

He received a Guggenheim Fellowshipthe next year allowing him to continue this work. Along The Lines, a group exhibition featuring: Charles Hinman, Jong Oh, Florian Schmidt runs May 1 to June 22, 2014 At Marc Straus (299 Grand St. New York). There will be a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, May 4.

The three artist in this exhibit have work connected by their use of straight lines and a crisp formalism. The extraneous is omitted removed. But don't pull out the trusty moniker "minimalist" either. There is more to these than simply that.

In these photos Purkayastha documents colonial architecture in Calcutta--now fading. The project has been eight yeas in the making. In 2006 the artist noted the slowly crumbling Parsi, Christian, Armenian, Jewis and Ango-Indian communities in the city. He was awestruck by the crumbling architecture associated with all these groups. The project grew to include British colonial architecture as well.

Purkayastha’s  2002 exhibition, Aksaha  received the Habitat Award for Best Photography Exhibition. This is just one of the awards he's been nominated for or received.
