This is Holz third solo show with Rare. The title comes from Moby Dick. I won’t go into the specifics as to why. Go to the exhibit. Suffice it to say that it involves searching on unexpected paths.

Holz uses gesso, acrylic, oil and resin. He samples images from the likes of Goya and Darger and mixes these with found contemporary images.

Site/Schema

Nikki Painter’s solo exhibition Site/Schema consists of drawings and two installations specifically for the site, Civilian Art Projects in Washington D.C.  The exhibit opens Saturday, September 17, 2011 (7-9 pm opening) This is Painter’s second solo exhibit and her work consists of patterns and bright colors. Her work is dominated by an exploration of the interaction and coexistence of order with chaos.

One of her installations, The Entrance, takes place in Civilian’s new foyer.

Hard Art DC

Hard Art DC 1979 is not just an exhibit at Civilian Art Projects that opens, Friday November 4  (again, 7 to 9 p.m.) and closing December 31st. It is an upcoming book of photos by Lucian Perkins, written by Alex MacKaye. There is even some sort of “contribution” by Henry Rollins. The exhibit itself is edited/curated by Lely Constantinople and Jayne McLellan (director of Civilian)

Rollin’s involvement might clue you into this having something to do with punk rock. And this being about DC you know it will include Bad Brains, Trench Mouth, etc. Man, that will be an interesting reception if HR shows up.  The photos are of shows over a five year period by Perkins, who was then a 26 year old intern. MacKaye was a teenager and in attendance at many of the shows.

Special Programs

Open Platform is a curated series of area collectors, gallerists, museum directors, curators, scholars and critic. Aandrea Stang, Senior Education Program Manager for The Museum of Contemporary Art , Los Angles is organizing the program. Topics include some fascinating ones; video artists working under the massive shadow of Hollywood, the impact of art in Los Angeles in the past 35 years, performance art in Los Angeles and more.

Installation, Art Platform Los Angeles’ Concourse projects space will be home to a series of projects by area galleries and non profits. This are, L.A. Mart Lobby, will also have sculpture projects by leading contemporary artists.

Artillery Lounge (from the folks at Artillary Magazine; Killer Text On Art), The magazine is celebrating its fifth anniversary. This loung will be on the concourse level and consist of a happy hout bar, liver performances, cutting edge videos and, a place to take a breather.

Artillary Magazine Video Lounge, curated by Paul Young of Young Projects. Young Projects was founded to help alter perception—specifically your perception (and mine I suppose) of moving imagery. They want to challenge the traditions put in place by film and television and creat a concrete art form like painting, sculpture and photography. This venue is for such experimental film artists to explore their medium.

Co/Lab, is a joining of 19 dnon-profit art groups. This is their first year at Art Platform-Los Angeles. This is an opportunity for those visiting Art Platform to survey Los Angeles art scene and its emerging artists

BOOM/MFA Exhibition is collection of 40 MFA students and recent graduates of Southern California art schools. The space is 7000 square feet and includes numerous different mediums. The exhibition was curated by Ali Subotnick, curater of the Hammer Museum.

Cernuda Arte has some new works that are flying out the door---and also some that are still in the house. If you have a sack full of money you just have to get rid of? You should drop by.

Cernuda has images of these new (and by new they mean NEW to the gallery, not recently painted) artworks that you can see HERE. They note that 16 of the 24 pieces have been sold. Eight still remain. It speaks to the current art market and the marketability of Latin, and in particular Cuban, artists.

The prices on these are valid for 30 days minimum!

Photo Booth An Exhibition By Parisian Photographer Marc Bellini, Opens In London, September 9th

8/16/2011

Picture
Marc Bellini’s exhibition of automatic photography opens at Bicha Gallery on September 9, 2011. There will be a reception from 6:30 to 8:30 on September 8, 2011. The fine people at Bicha were among those we talked to at Art Chicago/Next 2011.

Bellini has been in exploration mode using the automatic photobooth as his medium for the past 16 years. He used this “modern confessional” to capture his private thoughts on a variety of subjects. These booths are everywhere, every zoo, every park,  every attraction. They first appeared at the Paris World’s Fair in 1889. It is hard to recall all the times they have been featured in film and literature. Artists have been likewise fascinated—Andre Breton, Gerhard Richter, Gillian Wearing, Cindy Sherman, Andy Warhol (of course) and surprisingly, Helmut Newton. This is surprising, perhaps, only to me. It isn’t what I visualize when I think of Newton.

Go and see for yourself. Bicha is located at 7 Gabriel’s Wharf, South Bank, London SE1 9PP
