Aqua Art Miami, Actually In Miami Beach, Takes Over The Aqua Hotel In The Heart Of South Beach

11/29/2017

Picture
Aqua Art Miami actually takes place in Miami Beach at the Aqua Hotel Deccember 6 to 10, 2017. There is a distinction between Miami and Miami Beach. Even though Lebron James said he was taking his talents to South Beach (technically Miami Beach south of about 17th Street) he was really taking them to MIAMI.

The artists of Aqua Art Miami are, in fact, taking THEIR talents to South Beach. Aqua always has one of the most fun, easy-going openings of any fair. The fair is also smaller, easy to go through and the selection of galleries is unique and stylistically  varied.

Among the galleries on hand this year are Boxheart Gallery (Pittsburgh) and Tranter-Sinni Gallery (Miami). You can check out some pieces from each below. Also, check out the complete exhibitor list HERE.

Untitled, Art Runs December 6 To 10, 2017 On Miami Beach (Literally, ON Miami Beach)

Untitled, Art will once again grace Miami Beach (it takes place, literally ON the beach) from December 6 to 10, 2017. Just head east on 12th Street and when you run out of land? There it is.

You can see a complete list of exhibitors HERE. Below are images from a few galleries--Asya Geisberg Gallery, Fredericks & Freiser Gallery and Lombard Gallery.

Each year Untitled presents contemporary artists in an open, welcoming environment. Sometimes during art week you can feel like you are at a shopping mall on Black Friday. Generally no one elbows you out of the way to get at a $5 toaster but sometimes people get packed tight. The art at Untitled will impress the most persnickity fan of contemporary art but the layout makes it easy to take it all in. They have been the best laid out fair  pretty much every year they've been in Miami.

Ink Miami Art Fair (Miami Beach) Exhibitors Include GraphicStudio, Rabley Gallery, Tandem Press And Many Others December 6 To 10, 2017

Ink Miami Art Fair at the Suites of Dorchester (1850 Collins Ave., Miami Beach) has exhibitors such as GraphicStudio, Rabley Gallery and Tandem Press, among many others. The fair takes place from December 6 to 10, 2017. The fair is free and open to the public.

Ink is right near Art Basel, Form Miami and a number of other fairs (and also spitting distance from Lincoln Road). It is a fair focused on printed art. At fairs past I have seen works by Louise Bourgeois and Jim Dine to artists just starting their careers. The fair has pieces that are pricey to be sure but there are also tons of affordable pieces for a variety of tastes.

Ink Miami is also a small manageable fair. You can go through it in fairly short order (and have a drink at the hotel bar). It is a great fair to pop into before or after visiting Art Basel at the Convention Center.

Ameringer McEnery Yohe (New York) Present An Exhibition Of Work By Wolf Kahn From November 16 To December 23, 2017

Picture
Ameringer McEnery Yohe (525 W/ 23rd St., NY) present an exhibition of work by Wolf Kahn from November 16 to December 23, 2017. There will be a reception for the artist from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, November 16. The exhibition includes a fully illustrated catalogue with an essay by John Yau.

The exhibition includes paintings fro the pasy two years of Kahn's work in the studio. Color and form are key in his work. In some cases you will see detailed pieces and in others there seems to be only color. Yet, as you look at any piece it forms and reforms. The most abstract have form and the most detailed move toward the abstract with examination.

Kahn's work is distinct. When you see a Wolf Kahn painting there is no mistaking who created it. He recently turned 90 years old and is still, apparently, working hard.

Art Miami/Context Have A New Location For Their December 5-10, 2017 Fair

11/14/2017

Picture
Art Miami and Context Art Miami have a new location--One Herald Plaza, the former home of the Miami Herald. The new
location is right by Biscayne Bay and across the way from American Airlines Arena. The People mover ends nearby at the former Omni.

It is about the most MIAMI location you could possibly have. It is also more convenient to South Beach via the MacArthur and Venitian causeways.

They are not just going to put the fair there in ther rubble of the Herald either. They layed a 250,000 square foot concrete floor over the area. There will be six "hospitality areas" at the fair including a waterfront cafe, an indoor cafe, outdoor dining area, a cocktail lound and an outside cocktail deck overlooking the bay (in addition to VIP lounges). The hospitality areas can accommodate 600 people at a time.

Art Miami and Context are always worth visiting for the art. This year they are worth visiting for the view as well.

Stephen Friedman Gallery (London) Presents Kehinde Wiley's  "In Search Of The Miraculous" November 24, 2017 To January 27, 2018

11/14/2017

Picture
Stephen Friedman Gallery ( 25-28 Old Burlington St.,  London) presents Kehinde Wiley's  In Search of the Miraculous. This is the artist's second solo exhibition with the gallery.

The exhibition features nine new paintings and a three-channel artist film. His work brings art history and current
politics together in an examination of migration, madness and isolation in today's America. There has never been a time
when American isolation has seemed so real, so palpable--and this walling off of the country has world-wide resonance.

The new pieces are less single portraits and branches out into seascapes (particularly men on the seashore). His colors are even different, less exuberant, less patterned. They've become darker, more maritime.

Narrenschiff, Wiley's film, premieres at the British Film Institute at 8:35, Wednesday November 22, 2018. A conversation with the artist follows the movie. Find out more about the screening HERE.

If you've seen Wiley's work in person you have already seen something miraculous. His work is epic, fantastical and realistic at the same time. He is a transcendent artist.
