The piece, Mon costume Libellule de Cigale et de Fourmi, is made of a map of Palm Beach and Feathers. The dresses, shirts and kimonos always include maps as one component of the work.

The work is, to put it mildly, a harsh critique of society in cartoon form. The originals will cost you but the artist site also sells poster versions.

Cur8 Gallery (New York) showed work by Harif Guzman at Scope Miami Beach 2019.

Harif, from Venezuela, now lives and works in New York City. At first glance this work reminded me of a Japanese artist whose name eludes. But it is distinct from that as well. It is mainly the monochromatic aspect of the work that is similar. These pieces are acrylic on canvas.

The gallery website describes his paintings as a mix of pop art and street art. The latter is certainly true but it isn't the fancy, stylized sort of street art but the real sort of scrawl you see on the side of ignored buildings. The sort of "street art" that isn't auctioned at Sotheby's.

Butch Anthony showed various work at Scope Miami Beach 2019.

Butch Anthony is often described as a "folk artist" and you will likewise see publications referring to his work as if it was comparable to a set from Hee Haw in the 70s. In many cases they seem to mean this as a compliment. It is so QUAINT and Southern say the big city Northern publications.

But the art here is sophisticated in both content and execution. There is, fairly often, a sort of darkness to it. It is something you should know more about.

Sesma was born in Donostia, Spain. This piece, Olympia, is oil on wood. This, and much of his work, is a sort of "warped realism."

Martina (Monza, Italy) showed work by Laurina Paperina at Scope Miami Beach 2019.

Paperina's work, is part pop art but not the normal, tired sort of pop art, the "Andy-Warhol-with-glitter" sort of pop art. This is nothing like that (as you can see).

Sure, Spongebob, Darth Vader and Bambi make appearances and you may see a crucified Mickey Mouse here and there? But no glitter. The pieces range in theme from silly humor to political commentary.

Sensations of Animals by Anthony Lister

Mortal Machine (New Orleans) showed work by Anthony Lister and Hari & Deepti at Scope Miami Beach 2019.

Hari & Deepti are a husband and wife team working in Mumbai. They work in paper and light. The pieces below, Act 1 and Act 2, are intricate and lovely pieces that reflect their work as a whole. They relocated to India from Denver and traveled Asia on the way, picking up inspiration for their art. In addition to numerous shows they do workshops on paper art.

Lister began as a street artist, although his style doesn't immediately scream "STREET ARTIST". You may, on first glance, you might be reminded of Ralph Steadman, but the resemblance there is superficial. The artist, from Brisbane, uses charcoal, oil, acrylic and spray paint in his studio work (although presumably not his street art).

Galleri Ramfjord (Oslo) showed work by Ingbjørg Støyva and Joel Daniel Phillips At Scope Miami Beach 2019.

Støyva was born in Bergen, Norway and grew up in a small village. Her work is a mix of realism and fantasy, faithful depiction of people an objects mixed with a slight skewing of the same. Go to the website link above to see her work.

Phillips is an American artist who works in pencil. The large format piece below is a pencil drawing. At first glance here, or in person, it can easily be mistaken for photograph. The work is amazing in its detail and depth but, more important than that, in its construction. It is more than a depiction, there is something surreal about it. When you look closely at the figures you are shaken from reality. They almost seem like shadows or like the remnants of people left behind after the eruption of Pompey.

Galerie Juliane Hundertmark (Berlin) showed work by Juliane Hundertmark and Walter Wolf at Scope Miami Beach 2019.

Wolf's piece is oil on canvas while both Hundertmark's are oil, graphite and collage on paper (Picnick) and oil and collage on canvas (After Hour).

Wolf's work is somewhere between Byzantine iconography and Egyptian tomb painting, or at least that was my initial reaction to it. Hundertmark's work are haunting fantasies. They are somewhere between sweet and horrific.

Van Bavink Gallery (Amsterdam) showed work by De Winter at Scope Miami Beach 2019.

Amsterdam-based artist, De Winter, creates wall sculptures (my term not the artist's) using found materials and juxtaposing these in pieces reflecting social and political issues. You may have to stop and ponder.

Regardless of the intent behind the pieces, they are beautiful. There are other pieces that are more stand-alone sculptures. Check out the gallery link above for more information.
