Candice Smith Corby’s work will be the subject of an exhibition, Fortified, at Ellen Miller Gallery, 38 Newbury Street, Boston from May 11 to June 9. 2012. There will be a reception with the artist Saturday, May 12, 3-5 pm.
Corby’s work confront the comforts—and tension—in domestic life. She casts an eye, in particular on acquired roles of women. Her work is influenced by kid’s games, roll playing and employs textiles. Furniture is arranged in odd configurations and quilts or blankets are used to envelop these. This conjures images of all the “forts” I built as a youngster (hence the exhibition’s name).
