Marc Strauss (299 Grand St., New York) presents work by Margaret Loy Pula and Lily Kelly Napangardi in an exhibit running from May 9 to June 28, 2015. The two are Australia's leading indigenous artists and this is their first gallery exhibition in North America. There will be a reception from 5 to 7 p.m., Saturday, May 9.

These abstract works come from a different world and a different mindset from the abstract artists that generally spring to mind. The art depicts "tribal tales and dreams through abstract mark-making." The form of art has its own symbols and voice.

Edward Burtynsky's  Nature Transformed at Von Lintel Gallery (2685 S. La Cienega Blvd., Los Angeles) from April 25 to June 7, 2015. There will be an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 25.

This is Burtynsky's first solo show with the gallery. The artist is known for his look at how landscapes are reshaped via human interference. These large-scale photographs are from far above and turn these images of rice terraces and irrigation plots into colorful images that seem almost out of science fiction. They are beautiful, staggering and sometimes terrifying pieces in their implication.

Burtynsky's work is featured in the collections of over 60 major museums. His fifth book, Burtynsky-Water, came out in 2013 along with a documentary Watermark. We posted o this last year. Any opportunity to see his work in person should be seized.

Marjolijn de Wit' "Pots Are Not People" At Asya Geisberg Gallery (New York) April 23 To May 23, 2015

Marjolijn de Wit's Pots Are Not People at Asya Geisberg Gallery (537B West 23rd St., New York) April 23 to May 23, 2015. There will be an opening reception/book party from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 23.

The artist will be on hand to sign a limited number of the book, Pots Are Not People.

As you may note from the photos here the exhibit features ceramic/photo collage. There will also be painting, sculpture and installation in the exhibit. The ceramic/photo collages used ceramics or photo prints of ceramics.

The title of the exhibit references a 1977 article by Carol Kramer (Pots and Peoples). The ethno-archeologist put forward the notion that ethnicity is more complex than is often percieved, not leaving clear marks in the archeological record. In essence deriding the anthropological notion that you can reconstruct a society with a few shards of pottery. Kramer wasn't throwing the baby out with the bathwater merely noting that archeological records are far from complete.

De Wit is a native of the Netherlands who lives in Amsterdam.

Alex Weinstein's "Westward Paintings" Runs At Leslie Sacks Contemporary (Santa Monica) April 25 To June 6, 2015

Alex Weinstein's Westward Paintings runs at Leslie Sacks Contemporary (2525 Michigan Ave., B6, Santa Monica) April 25 to June 6, 2015. There will be a reception for the artist from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 25.

Weinstein's recent paintings are based on evening light and how it moves across the Pacific Ocean. There are no figures, no waves; most decipherable content is gone in his work. What you are left with are the subtle color shifts. These mimic the color shifts in nature without the forms to distract. Some of these works might seem to be one solid color at first glance but when you look closer? The shift in color will be evident.

Weinstein lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
