Entang Wiharso's Promising Land Runs April 9 To May 14, 2017 At Marc Straus (299 Grand St., New York). There will be an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, April 9.

Wiharso is one of Indonesia's top contemporary artists. He splits his time between Indonesia and Rhode Island (with his wife and partner, Christine Cocca and their kids). His work reflects this duality. The work often takes the form of frieze-like metal art. Both Eastern and Western images and motifs find their way into the work. He also does three dimensional pieces in graphite.

Tillman's sculptures combine handmade and manufactured metal, hand-sewn and upholstered geometric shapes that reference the gaudy, faux-luxury items and flashy (some might say cheesy) fashion.

Jen Durbin's 90 Moves in Nine Seconds (The Jackie Series 2001-2017) runs April 5 to May 21, 2017 at Art 3 (109 Ingraham St., Brooklyn). There will be a reception from 1 to 5 p.m., Sunday, April 9.

This series consists of 22 pieces, half sculptures made of wood, reed, plaster, papier maché and felted mohair; the other half are panel drawings, models and maps based on the Zapruder Film. For those who haven't seen Oliver Stone's JFK, the Zapruder Film is a grainy, shaky film of the assassination of President Kennedy.

The title of the installation refers to the 90 different facial expressions that Jackie Kennedy showed in the few seconds of the film.

Sebastião Salgado's Kuwait runs at Sundaram Tagore Gallery (547 West 27th St., New York) from March 30 to April 20, 2017. There will be a reception, with the artist, from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, March 30. Salgado will be signing copies of two of his books--Kuwait: A Desert on Fire (Taschen, 2016) and Genesis (Taschen, 2013).

It isn't hyperbole to write that Salgado is one of a handful of living photographers who can be called "the greatest living photographer." His work is somewhere between fine art and journalism; they are beautiful and often horrifying.

The Kuwait series are photographs taken near the end of the Iraq War, when the desert was full of burning oil wells. These images first appeared in The New York Times Magazine back in 1991 and won the Oskar Barnack Award. The award recognizes work that highlights the relationship between humans and the environment. Anyone aware in 1991 remembers the hellish images from the oil fields after Saddam Hussein's troops set them alight.

In conjunction with this exhibit Sundaram Tagore opens select images from Salgado's Genesis series at their other location--1100 Madison Ave. beginning April 1, 2017.

Virgins, work by Betty Tompkins, runs March 30 to May 6, 2017 at P.P.O.W. (535 West 22nd St. New York). There will be a reception from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, March 30.

Tompkins is a pioneering feminist artist known for her depictions of sexuality, desire and the female body. The pieces to be shown have never been shown in New York. These include the artist's large, Fuck Paintings, a new installation of Pussy Paintings and new works on paper. Her work often uses porno images as a starting point.

These are works that makes you look at images and subjects (oddly) seen as taboo. This is a must-see exhibit.

Awkward is the latest exhibit from Anna Zorina Gallery (533 West 23rd St, New York) features work by: John Bradford, Katherine Bradford, Siro Cugusi, Shaun Ellison, William Hawkins, Paul Housley, Cristina Lama and Tim Stone.

There will be an opening 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 30th.

The exhibit, curated by Ellison, features artists whose work denys the technical conventions of realism. These pieces are direct, instinctive and spontaneous. You may sense something "ungraceful" in the pieces but that is just part of what makes this exhibit....awkward.

Picon's work, shown in the South Gallery, evokes European Modernism in a variety of styles and movements. The North
Gallery will show Los Angeles-based Langford's work from two series--his Morphic Del Mar series.

Edwards is a painter and teacher living in Wisconsin. She has a Masters of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing from Northern Illinois University. Her work has been exhibited across the USA.

In This Moment, work by Christina Tenaglia and Anne C. Smith, runs at Adah Rose Gallery (3766 Howard Ave. Kensington, MD) from March 30 to June 4, 2017.

There will be an opening 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Saturday, April 8 accompanied by live music by Terraplane.

Smith's work, using charcoal and graphite, is inspired by the night. Her drawings are deliberate, inspired by landscape and memory. She works in drawing, scuplture and printmaking. She is a teaching artist at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC and also works in the studio with Lou Stovall, master print maker.

Tenaglia is a scuptor who works in wood and paint. She also works on paper in pen and ink and collage. Her pieces may be representational or abstract. They are always detailed and whimsical.

The critics forum, Criticism in the Post-Truth Era, features Ana Bilbao, Sarah Douglas, Kevin McGarry and Kenny Schachter. The forum is to be moderated by Christian Viveros-Fauné. The forum takes place from 5 to 6 p.m., Thursday, September 14, 2017

The Curatorial forum, developed by Expo and Independent Curators International, offers established and mid-career curators, both independent and working for institutions, a chance to discuss issues with their peers. There is also a panel, open to the public, that will give a glimpse into these discussions from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., Thursday, September 14, 2017.
