Talavera's provocative work uses a different medium; graphite, watercolor, ink etc. I was told that the artist is concerned about animal rights and consciousness and that these work reflect that concern.

Adah Rose Gallery (Kensington, MD) showed work by Randall Lear, Jim Condron and Jessica Drenk at Pulse Miami Beach 2014. Lear is the subject of an exhibit going on right now at the Maryland gallery (Ruminate My Rainbow Trees) which runs until April 12, 2015. Condron and Drenk's work has appeared at the gallery's Pulse booth previously. We featured her work and chatted with her a few years back HERE. Adah Rose Gallery is always a highlight of Art Week. There is an exuberance and life in the work they show (as you can see here). by Jessica Drenk by Jim Condron
Davidson Contemporary Showed Ghost Of A Dream's "The Center Of Convention" At Pulse Miami Beach 20143/12/2015 Davidson Contemporary showed The Center of Convention, an installation piece by Ghost of a Dream. Ghost of a Dream is Adam Eckstrom and Lauren Was who live and work in Brooklyn and Wassaic, New York.
The duo create works on paper, collage, texts, sculpture and, of course, installation. You can, and indeed should, find out more at ghostofadream.com. Purdy Hicks Gallery (London) Showed Work By Susan Derges and Lee Youngbin at Pulse Miami 20143/12/2015 Purdy Hicks Gallery (London) showed work by Susan Derges and Lee Youngbin at Pulse Miami Beach 2014. Youngbin uses watercolor and Korean ink. She mixes cultural metaphors by using a technique simiar to Egyptian hieroglyphics in that things are draw in the way they can most easily be understood. Derges tries to capture natural and scientific processes in her work. This piece is a unique C-type print. She sometimes imerses photographic paper directly into the water of rivers or shorelines to capture the movement of water. She uses a variety of unusual methods of exposing prints. Her work is fascinating to look at but the process beyond that makes it all even more interesting. Bath by Lee Youngbin
Front Room Gallery (Brooklyn) showed work by Mark Masyga at Pulse Miami Beach 2014. You can see more from the artist at markmasyga.com. The artist has a BFA from St. Cloud State University (Minnesota) and a MFA from the School of the Art Institute. His work draws you in with seeming simplicity. As you get closer, however, you will find detail not apparent at first glance. Perhaps it is the use of color that distracts from the work's linear skeleton? There is something almost architectural in the pieces but also something pastoral. Yes, that sounds a little crazy. His paintings function from different theoretical perspective (at least for me). You can image you are looking at a horizon or down from on high. McKenzie Fine Art (New York) showed work by Jean Lowe at Pulse Miami Beach 2014. Lowe's work is of imaginary products in paper mâché. I actually wish some of these products were real. The world would be a slightly funnier place. I think Lowe should pitch Get Thee Behind Me Satan devil's food cake to Duncan Hines. For people of a certain age these pieces might call to mind "Wacky Packs" but a tad more subtle in both execution and conception! Junior Projects (New York) showed work by Stuart Elster at Pulse Miami Beach 2014. Elster's textured pieces had a needed sign below them; please do not touch. The urge to reach out and touch these pieces is pronounced. The work creates real life images using two colors. Elster has a BFA in painting. University of the Arts (Philadelphia) and an MFA from Yale in painting and printmaking. Hosfelt Gallery (San Francisco) showed work by Gideon Rubin and Cornelius Völker at Pulse Miami Beach 2014. Rubin's pieces often use photos as their basis. I was told these pieces were gouache on on vintage Chinese magazines. You can see that (after you are told at least!). You can see more of Rubin's work at the gallery website. Völker's gun pieces are oil on canvas. At first glance they may remind you of some pieces by Andy Warhol. The angle you see these weapons at is different from the Warhol guns; they give you a feeling they've just been used or are about to be used. Nohra Haime Gallery (New York) showed work by Natalia Arias at Pulse Miami Beach 2014. Mapanare had the good luck to interview Arias before Miami's Art Week. You can revist that interview HERE. The best place to hear about art is from the artist. Arias was born in Great Britain and raised in Columbia. Her work references myth, cliche, iconography and often employs sarcasm. Sarcasm is an underused tool in fine art. Greg Kucera Gallery Inc. (Seattle) Showed Work By Whiting Tennis At Pulse Miami Beach 20143/11/2015 Greg Kucera Gallery Inc. (Seattle) showed this piece by Whiting Tennis at Pulse Miami Beach 2014. Tennis creates pieces that are oils (the one here), acrylic and collage. He has also been a sculptor, a musician and set-maker. Why is it set-makers are often excellent fine artists? Does it give some grasp of perspective non-set designers lack? Be sure to head to the gallery site linked above to see more from Tennis. |
