How can art be simultaneously disturbing, fun and oddly inviting? I have no idea, yet that is what these pieces are. You might not want to be at the party with the human-esque creatures depicted but we would all probably want to peek in through the window.
Knight Webb Gallery (London) showed pieces by Juliane Hundertmark at Context Miami 2015.

Alexander Mijares, from Miami, showed a great deal of his colorful, energetic work during Miami Art Week 2015. His work references his Cuban and Spanish roots. These photos do not do his pieces justice. I stumbled across them wandering around and was glad that I did. Find out more about him at www.mijares.com. Marianne Darlen Solhaugstrand Showed Work Via Locus (Oslo, Norway) At X Contemporary Miami 20153/17/2016 Marianne Darlen Solhaugstrand's work was shown at X Contemporary 2015 (Miami) via Locus (Oslo). You can listen to the artist's own words about her work in the video below. Find out more in the artist and gallery links above. Locus was established in 2006 by Thale Fastvold and Tanja Thorjussen. Solhaugstrand came aboard in 2014. Kathy Kissik Showed "Cardboard Factory" At X Contemporary 2015 Via Robert Fontaine Gallery ( Miami)3/17/2016 Kathy Kissik showed Cardboard Factory at X Contemporay 2015 via Robert Fontaine Gallery (Miami). Kissik, a graduate of both the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston) and Tufts University, works in both photography, welding and painting. As you can see here her work often has an architectural component. She used old cardboard, recycled wire and fuses in her work as well. Beers Contemporary (London) showed work by Andrew Salgado at Pulse Miami 2015. Salgado is a Canadian-born, London-based artist. You can find out more about him HERE. Lots of high end publications and galleries tout him as a sound investment. He also has two high profile exhibits coming up this year. The first begins May 9, 2016 at Thierry Goldberg Gallery (New York) and the second October at Beers. Charlie James Gallery (Los Angeles) showed work by Ramiro Gomez and Guy Richards Smit at Pulse Miami 2015. In an earlier incarnation Gomez' work showed more realistic scenes of Californians (the homes of the rich from the eyes of the folks who work for them). At one point the artist worked as a live-in nanny. These works, although more abstract in their construction, seem to pursue the same theme--a worthy one. Smit is known as a painter, performer and creator of video installations. His work references all sorts of popular media--but I, for one, would never call it pop art. There are references to stand-up comedy, comics, music and the front pages of newspapers (soon to be a historical curiosity). Julie Saul Gallery (New York) showed work by Maira Kalman at Pulse Miami 2015. Kalman is an Israeli-born artist, (Tel Aviv) who lives and works in the United States. She is also a writer and designer. You can find out more about her writing and art at www.mairakalman.com. These small pieces are all gouache on paper. The Painters and After Henri Cartier-Bresson
Wagner + Partner (Berlin) showed work by Stefan Kürten at Pulse Miami 2015. This piece is acrylic and ink on paper. His work often features houses which are more full of symbolism as the line between "security and abandonment." Look closely at this pice and you see the sprawling building in the midst of the tropical environment. Purdy Hicks Gallery (London) Showed Work By Ralph Fleck And Susan Derges At Pulse Miami 20151/22/2016 Purdy Hicks Gallery (London) showed work by Ralph Fleck and Susan Derges at Pulse Miami 2015. Fleck, a German painter, paints crowd scenes, cityscapes as well as single color pieces depicting the Alps. His pieces are impressions, not representations of actual cities or mountains (or presumably, piles of books). For some reason these buildings remind me of the cakes of Wayne Thiebaud. Derges' work often captures nature or science in the form of a print. She pioneered exposing photographs by placing them in the running water of a river (etc). Her pieces, like the C-print below, often seem to move. |
