Susan Silton's "We" June 26 To August 14, 2021 At Luis De Jesus (Los Angeles)

Picture
Susan Silton's We runs June 26 to August 14, 2021 at Luis De Jesus (1110 Mateo St., Los Angeles). There will be an opening from 3 to 6pm, Saturday, June 26.

This is the artist's firrst solo exhibition with the gallery. You can make an appointment HERE (although these are not necessary)

Silton, in this new body of work, is questioning the nature of reality vs appearances. The work consists of 16 photo etchings of landscapes. The prints are of images that, initially, appear the same but each has actually been subtly modified, exposing differences. An interesting way of illustrating how our perception will invariably differ from another human standing next to us.

Olga Korper Gallery (Toronto) presents new work by Angela Grauerholz from April 28 to June 2, 2018. There will be an opening, with the artist, 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 28.

Grauerholz, a Canadian photographer and photographic performer, balances betwee the realistit and the romantic. Large scale dreamlike photographs draw the audience into a sense of nostalgia. There is a familiarity, almost a muscle memory
in the images. But not really. It only seems that way.

Sebastião Salgado's "Kuwait" Opens At Sundaram Tagore Gallery (New York) March 30, 2017 (Salgado Will Be At The Opening)

Sebastião Salgado's  Kuwait  runs at Sundaram Tagore Gallery (547 West 27th St., New York) from March 30 to April 20, 2017. There will be a reception, with the artist, from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, March 30. Salgado will be signing copies of two of his books--Kuwait: A Desert on Fire (Taschen, 2016) and Genesis (Taschen, 2013).

It isn't hyperbole to write that Salgado is one of a handful of living photographers who can be called "the greatest living photographer." His work is somewhere between fine art and journalism; they are beautiful and often horrifying.

The Kuwait series are photographs taken near the end of the Iraq War, when the desert was full of burning oil wells. These images first appeared in The New York Times Magazine back in 1991 and won the Oskar Barnack Award. The award recognizes work that highlights the relationship between humans and the environment. Anyone aware in 1991 remembers the hellish images from the oil fields after Saddam Hussein's troops set them alight.

In conjunction with this exhibit Sundaram Tagore opens select images from Salgado's Genesis series at their other location--1100 Madison Ave. beginning April 1, 2017.

Also? If you haven't seen the documentary, Salt of the Earth? Go get a copy.

Ion Zupcu’s American Homes is a series of 24 silver gelatin prints. They totally amaze me and  I have not even seen them in person, only the photos send by Ellen Miller Gallery in Boston. Imagine how wonderful the actual prints look.

Zupcu states that "The houses showcased in this series illustrate the spirit and evolution of common houses found throughout North American neighborhoods from the past four centuries. They represent a range of homes from Folk Houses to McMansions. The development of these styles is a reflection of our ever-changing taste and sensibility.”

The photos are of architectural models designed specifically for the photos with architect, Tagore Hernandez.

For more information head to ellenmillergallery.com. Ellen Miller Gallery is located at 38 Newbury Street,  Boston, MA.

Lise Sarfati's "On Hollywood" At Yossi Milo Gallery In NYC

Picture
Yossi Milo Gallery presents an exhibition my photographer, Lise Sarfati. The exhibit, entitled On Hollywood, opens September 6, 2012 at 245 Tenth Avenue, New York City. An artist reception and a book signing take place from 6 to 8 pm. Thursday, September 6. Sarfati will be signing her latest book, She.

This is Sarfati’s third solo show at Yossi Milo.

On Hollywood depicts the women lured to Los Angeles by dreams of Hollywood success. The focus is on the landscape and the reality these women face in the LA environment. Sarfati nods to Guy Debord’s “psycho-geographical wanderings”—ie how our geographical surroundings affect our behavior and emotion. Sarfati wandered in LA taking this photos of street corners, parking lots and other run-of-the-mill spots. She then went back to these locations. Both the people and places are the fringes of society.

Sarfati is set to have a solo show in 2014 at   Bibliothèque Nationale de France. She has previously had solo shows at numerous European institutions. If her work seems familiar you may have seen it at the Museum of Modern Art, Los AngelesCounty Museum of Art or the Brooklyn Museum of Art—among others.
