Susan Bee's Doomed To Win: Paintings from the Early 1980s, runs April 3 to 27 At A.I.R. Gallery (111 Front St. #228, Brooklyn). The exhibit is from A.I.R. and Accola Griefen Gallery. The paintings are fom just a few years in the early 1980s, a transformative phase of the artist's career.  The exhibit is curated by Kat Griefen.

Bee has often based her work on film stills. One of the interesting things about this exhibit is that it is a sort of prequel. The artist has been acclaimed for her more recent work. This is a look at where that work comes from.

Bee has been widely exhibited at galleries and museums all over the USA and her work has been reviewed in virtually every art publication that matters.

Shea is based in New York and received his MFA from University of Illinois at Chciago. He released his first book, Blisner Ill. during a long-term residency at Columbia College (Chicago). A follow-up book is coming in September, 2014.

Debra Baxter's All I Ever Wanted runs from March 27 to April 25, 2014 at Platform Gallery (114 Third Avenue South, Seattle). There is an artist reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday March 27.

The exhibit is a further examination of the body, vulnerability and power plays. She often juxtaposes carved rock with glass, crystals, metal and minerals. She received her MFA in sculpture from Bard College. The piece pictured here, Soft Landing, is her take on Albrecht Dürer's piece, Six Studies of Pillows from 1493. It takes some guts to riff on Dürer.

Some pieces will be included in the book and show, On Body and Soul: Contemporary Armor to Amulets by Suzanne Ramljak. The exhibit is supported by grants from 4Culture and Artist Trust.

Adah Rose Gallery (3766 Howard Ave. Kensington, Md.) presents An Allegory Of Algorithms And Aesthetics, work by Jessica Drenk from April 11 to May 12, 2014. There will be an opening verinssage from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday April 12. Music by The Blackberry Blonde.

We've written about (and videotaped) Drenk before. Her scupltures begin with simple materials and are informed by "systems of information." She often manipulates books, PVC pipes and other cultural items in her work. She hints at the "mortality" of these inanimate objects--they decay as surely as we do.

Drenk, from Montana and living in Florida, also makes work that is truly beautiful.

She is the recipient of the 2006 International Sculpture Center's Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award. Her work has been show in Sculpture Magazine, Juxtapose, Philadelphia Magazine and many others.

This exhibit, as the name suggests, deals with the peskiest part of communication--choosing words that convene an intended meaning. This struggle is "often tantamount to shouting into a void." All the pieces shown here use words that are ambiguous. Are they commands? Are they humor? Are they just about spaghetti?

Work by 18 artists will be included.
