Raw Vision, A Magazine Of Outsider Art; 22 Years Of Bringing Outsiders "Inside"

10/25/2011

Picture
Raw Vision is an art magazine dedicated to "outsider" art. And outsiders of any sort are near and dear to me.

I wanted, in this section, to call people's attention to art magazines and other publications that you really should know about--if you have an interest in art.

Raw Vision began publishing in 1989 with the aim of bringing the unknown geniuses of the art world some public attention. And I do mean geniuses. I wish there were more publications like this in other areas like music. How many geniuses do we never hear or see. But I digress.

Often what you see in galleries and museums is art that comes out of higher art education and there is nothing wrong with that. To be sure there are galleries and museums who do feature outsider art but more feature artists with a high level of art education or who fit into certain...paradigms. The outsiders featured in Raw Vision make their own rules, unencumbered by conventions, styles, artistic fads, worrying about what is "hot" and will get you noticed.

They are artists because they have to do it.

I don't want to put too fine a point on this because I am a huge fan of many artists who have advanced education. Some of those artists pride themselves on breaking rules as well. To me, it is about exposure. Raw Vision gives artists who are outside the magical circle of museum and institutional art a voice and they get people's eyes on these artists.

You can find out more on Raw Vision HERE. Likewise you can pick up a subscription there. You can also do what I do and grab issues at your local bookstores. Most places with a decent selection of magazines will have it

Peter Symonds Exhibit Opens At W.H. Patterson In London, November 2, 2011

A new exhibition of landscapes by artist, Peter Symonds, begins November 2 and ends November 25th at W. H. Patterson, 19 Albemarle Street,  London, England. There will be a preview November 1, 2011, with RSVP required.

For this exhibition all pieces are for sale. For more information or to RSVP go to www.whpatterson.com.

For more on Symonds head to www.petersymondsartist.co.uk.

Picture
Symonds was born in Surrey and lives in the area still. He began painting 25 years ago. He is a self-taught artist and uses only oil on canvas. His art is not just of the area around his home. He travels to find his subjects. His website says his paintings aim to  grab the attention of the viewer—which the certainly do.  His paintings are of real places yet they seem to have an other worldly—or “other timely” feel to them.  I am, of course, judging from seeing the images rather than the actual paintings.

If you are in London you have the opportunity to one-up me. Go and if you have the means bring your check book.

Andrew Radacz Gallery in Chicago presents No More Heroes, new works by Andrew Falkowski (in galleries 1 and 2). This is Falkowski’s first solo exhibit with the gallery. The show begins October 22, 2011 and closes December 3, 2011. There will be a reception Saturday, October 22, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 835 West Washington, Chicago.

Falkowski lives and works in Chicago and his recent exhibitions include, Heroes and Villains, with Rosamund Felson in Los Angeles and No Asylum Here at The Suburban in Oak Park. He has also been exhibited in a multi-artist exhibit at The Contemporary Art Museum  St. Louis.

For those of you heading to Miami in December you can see his work at the NADA Art Fair (during the hurricane of shows surrounding Art Basel Miami Beach).

This exhibition is made up of several new monochromatic paintings based on screen shots of depictions of Napoleon in film and television. Is it hyper realism or hyper pop? You be the judge.

Lloyd Dobler Gallery Presents A Solo Show By Artist & Writer Dmitry Samarov

Short notice (for the opening anyway) but Lloyd Dobler Gallery is presenting a solo exhibition by Dmitry Samarov entitled Hack. The exhibit opens October 14 and runs through November 19. There will be an opening reception from 6-10 p.m. on Friday October 14 at Lloyd Dobler Gallery, 1545 W. Division, Second Floor in Chicago.

Samarov is an artist and writer and this exhibit is of drawings and paintings created while driving a taxi in Chicago. He has a recently published book on the subject, Hack: Stories From A Chicago Cab. A good deal of the paintings are gouache.

http://www.lloyddoblergallery.com

Samarov’s blog is also well worth a look. He was born in the Soviet Union and came to the USA in 1978. He received a BFA in painting and printmaking at the School of the Art Instituted. He then took that degree and hard work and began driving a cab.

His work has been shown all over Chicago and used in numerous publications. If you live in the city you have almost certainly seen it somewhere. I can barely imagine the horror of driving a cab in Chicago.

Trevor Young In Bi-Coastal Exhibits In Conjuction With Civilian Art Projects

Final Pump
Civilian Art Projects announced Trevor Young’s participation in three exhibitions in short order—all in the spooky month of October. Since this is art we will not refer to the month as “Rocktober.”

Young is an artist who I first noticed at Art Chicago, probably in 2010. I have a habit where I write down an artist name and the name of one of their works and some basic description. Two days later I forget 80 percent of them. I remembered Young.

Although, it might have actually been Art Basel week in Miami where I first noticed Young. Nonetheless, below you will find the various shows Young is participating in. His work struck me because his nightscapes were so alive. Often the subject matter is some mundane thing—a gas station, for instance. But they breathe as the night does. They are not black and static. It is a unique vision.

Young's work will appear n Pardon My French, a collector series in San Diego on October 14, 2011. The gist of this event is to elevate the caliber and profile of the North American Art Scene. If you are interested you need to get in touch with Civilian. It is somewhat short notice at this point.

Also look for Youngs art at;

La Luz de Jesus 25 "Part One"-La Luz de Jesus Gallery, 4633 Hollywood Blvd. Los Angeles, CA from October 7-30, 2011. 200 artists are participating in this show organized by Billy Shire and it is La Luz de Jesus first survey. Three generations of important artists are involved and we were late posting this so you missed the receptions.

You Are Here: Washington, DC-Dorian Grey Gallery, 437 East 9th Street at Avenue A. New York, NY from October 15 - November 13, 2011 with an opening reception October 15, 6 - 9 p.m. Works include pieces by: Billy Colbert, Lily Desaussure, Ryan Florig, Marissa Long, Joey Manlapaz, Alexa Meade, Adrian Parsons and Young. It may be in NYC but this show features artists living and working in D.C. as you would expect from Civlian.

Andrew Bird And Ian Schneller Bring "The Sonic Arboretum" To Chicago

10/5/2011

Picture
The Sonic Arboretum is a collaboration between Andrew Bird and Ian Schneller of Specimen Products. The former most think of as a musician, the latter many think of a guy who makes and fixes guitars. BUT both of them are also artists. Schnellers musical instruments are always, always art objects as well as functional instruments. Every piece is made to sound unique but also has a visual aesthetic that goes beyond the sonic.

If you have seen Andrew Bird perform you have seen Schnellers horns, two standing six piece plus tall.

The two artists combine their talents in the sonic installation, The Sonic Arboretum at the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art. The installation will cover the museum’s atrium from December 6 through New Years Eve. There will be two “sonic events” one on December 21 and the other on the 22nd. Bird will perform using the installation itself as a PA. Both begin at 7:30 p.m. with doors at 6:30 p.m, for tickets go HERE.

The debut of The Sonic Arboretum was at the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum in New York this past August.

Eamon O'Kane's Second Solo Show For Rare Gallery In NYC Opens October 13

E-1027 Gray Le Corbusier Mix 2011
Eamon O’Kane’s exhibition of new paintings/works on paper is entitled, There Is Another World, But It Is In This One, opens October 13 at Rare Gallery, 547 W. 27th Street #514, New York. There is a reception at Rare from 6 to 8 p.m. on the October 13. The exhibit ends November 12. This is O’Kane’s second solo show for Rare.

The title is taken, loosely, from a quote by Yeats. O’Kane’s art (in this show in any case) is autobiographical and attempts to express to the viewer his Irish upbringing under British rule. As an artist O’Kane references more than poets however, he uses mathematics, architecture and engineering as foils in his art. And much more than simply these.
