Aureus Contemporary (Rhode Island) showed work by Erik Ritter at Aqua Art Miami 2017.

Ritter refers to his art as Dejunked. He creates using the plastic flotsam of our throw-away society. Each piece is a collection of odds and ends that might have easily wound up in a landfill but instead become intricate, beautiful pieces of art.

Exhibit A (Corning, NY) showed work by Robin Whiteman at Aqua Art Miami 2017.

The artist has worked with clay since she was a pre-teen. She has a bachelors from Rochester Institute of Technology's School of Crafts (in Ceramics). The pieces here are porcelain but without the "shine" we usually expect. She does other sorts of ceramics as well. You can see more of her work at  www.robinwhiteman.com.

Such delicate and lovely works sold for (generally) just a bit over $2000 each. Which seems like something of a deal.

The pieces are heavy with symbolism and mythological portents and beings. Some you can perhaps suss out for yourself but for others it would probably require crawling into the artist's brain.

Whiteman's work has been shown since the mid-90s. She lives and works in the Finger Lakes area of New York State, which means she lives near some good wineries as well.

Childs Gallery (Boston) showed This Doll's House bu Sara Zielinski at Ink Miami 2017.

The pink room, from a distance looks like a little girl's room. But on closer examination it looks less like that (perhaps not a LOT less but less). I wish I had asked the artist a coherent question but my camera was on its way to breaking.

Everything in this room, from bath mats to wall hangings and even the toilet paper feature the artist's printed images. There are also dolls everywhere and they are meant to be played with and picked up--although I didn't see anyone doing that.

Find out more about Zielinski at Sarazielinski.com.

SHORT INTRO BEFORE THE CAMERA CUT OUT.....

A VERY BRIEF DISCUSSION OF THE INSTALLATION...

Rabley Gallery (Marlborough, England) Showed Work By Eileen Cooper And Naomi Frears At Ink Miami 2017

PictureIle De Re-Ile De Re by Eileen Cooper
Rabley Gallery (Marlborough, England) showed work by Eileen Cooper  and Naomi Frears at Ink Miami 2017.

Ra's piece is ink, pencil and gouache. Her work usually features female figures and her style is unmistakable--you would imagine a member of the Royal Academy would be this distinct, this remarkable. You can always recognize her art. Some pieces I've seen had a mythical quality to them. Find out more about her at the Royal Academy website.

The piece by Frears wasn't hung but was in a stack of unframed pieces. This is one of the great things about Ink Miami--there are often unframed pieces selling for a bit less than what you see on the wall and they are often gems. This one reminds me of things I've seen by the late, great Louise Bourgeois. Find out more about the artist at www.naomifrears.com.

Anita Beckers (Frankfurt Am Main) Showed Work By Anke Rohrschied At Untitled Miami beach 2017

Anita Beckers (Frankfurt am Main) showed work by Anke Rohrscheid at Untitled Miami Beach 2017. This untitled piece is aquarell (waterolors) on laid paper. It looks more textured than you might expect from watercolor.

There is something explosive about this piece and yet something calming. In the abstraction here you can find all sorts of forms lurking. They may well not be intentional by the artist but you can often find the inadvertent if you look hard.

Arróniz Arte Contemporáneo (Mexico City) showed work by Maria Edwards at Untitled Miami Beach 2017.

The work is titled Verse IV and is mixed media--it incorporates guitar picks, bicycle spokes, thread, steel bars and other odds and ends. The effect of this piece seems to imply flight, birds scattering at a sudden sound. There are also other obvious references to the aural here.

It is a difficult piece to capture in a photograph.

This piece is not complete. You can see most of it and get an idea of its scope. There was an old manual typewriter in front of the sheet music.

SMAC (Cape Town) Showed Work By Jody Paulsen At Untitled Miami Beach 2017

SMAC (Capetown) showed work by Jody Paulsen at Untitled Miami Beach 2017. Paulsen studied print media at University of Cape Town’s Michaelis School of Fine Arts. He later earned a Masters Degree.

The artist has also worked in the world of fashion. He collaborated with Adriaan Kuiters presenting collections at a number of fashion shows. It isn't hard, when looking at this work, to imagine a leap into the world of fashion.

There is something active about these pieces that is a product of color but also in the lines of the pieces that imply motion in an almost primal way.

Cindy Rucker Gallery (New York) showed work by Hirosuke Yabe at Untitled Miami Beach 2017.

These totemic pieces seemed vaguely angry and a little disturbing to me. Perhaps it was my mood? Fourth art fair of the given day can do that. The artist may mean nothing but happiness and life in these pieces.

Yabe holds a BFA in Sculpture from Tokyo Zoukei University of Art and Design. He splits his time between Kanagawa and Chiba in Japan.
