Wexler Gallery (Philadelphia) presented Street Shrine 1: A Notorious Story, by Robert Lugo at Design Miami 2019. The installation features two large funeral urns and a ceramic teddy bear.

Lugo is a teacher, a poet, a social activist and a potter. He is from Philadelphia and started as a street artist before moving into ceramics. Wexler Gallery also showed work by him at Expo Chicago 2019.

This booth demonstrated a unified design by the artist, rather than the collection of pieces that were at Expo Chicago. It is a step beyond.

Hive Contemporary (Havertown, PA) showed work by Joseph Ivacic, Paul J. Nelson and Eduardo Prado at Form Miami 2017.

All the work here is glass. The gallery does more than glass but this year? It just turned out everyone who had work available were doing glass.

Ivacic's art shown below is not a single piece but rather several pieces.

All of these pieces are best seen in person (as is the whole fair). Form is situated right near Art Basel Miami Beach and across from the Filmore. When they return in 2018 hopefully they will choose this same location.

R & Company (New York) showed this piece at Design Miami 2017.

I couldn't find who the designer was on their site. This was largely because I only took about 5 minutes. That was, however, an interesting five minutes. You can check out their designers HERE.

More will be coming on this, once I know who is the creator. I AM THE WALRUS!

Christina Grajales Gallery (New York) showed these pieces by Mike and Doug Starn at Design Miami. The pieces are bamboo with rock climbing cord.

One question people ask about fascinating designs like this is practical; can you SIT on the. In this case it took half an hour to get photos because people at the fair kept doing exactly that. In one case it seemed the person was about to pull out a book and have a glass of wine they sat there so long.

At a guess? They are comfortable and functional!

COS And Studio Swine Team Up To Present "New Spring, Miami" At The Temple House (Miami Beach)

COS and Studio Swine team up to present, New Spring, Miami, during Miami Art Week at The Temple House ( 1415 Euclid Ave., Miami Beach). The exhibit is open to the public and times are below.

Let me break into the "first person" here. I almost never go to things like this because they usually wind up sponsored by someone trying to sell you a new energy drink. This is not the case here; sure they want to sell their designs (and are at Design Miami as well). But that is the entire point. This piece is also just, mesmerizing. It truly is.  The form and design here might not actually be functional like a love seat or a dining room table ? To me, "mesmerising" is functional

Open
Wednesday 6 December: 11am-7pm
Thursday 7 December: 11am – 5pm
Friday 8 December: 11am-7pm
Saturday 9 December: 11am-7pm

Southern Guild (Cape Town) Showed This Piece By Porky Hefer--A Killer Whale Swing

12/3/2015

Southern Guild (Cape Town) showed this piece, a killer whale swing, by  Porky Hefer. The folks at the gallery said that Hefer originally began creating works based on the nests of weaver birds.

These are quite intricate nests that, even as the artist expands the actual shape, still are reminiscent  of the original form. When you see the more "nest-like" forms the killer whale, crocodiles and other creatures come into focus. Also not threat there is not a great deal of detail here; Hefer wants you to fill those in yourself.

See more by the artist HERE.

Friedman Benda (New York) showed a piece by the Chilean design group, gt2P, at Design Miami 2015. I could tell you about the process? But really? Just watch the videos below. The first is about the group and process and the second about function.

The group will also be part of the Airnbnb/ Belong.Here. Now. during Miami Art Week. This monolithic structure functions as urban theater of an interactive sort. Belong there...NOW! It was designed by Design With Company. The space is over 5000 square feet and invites you to be part of the performance (follow @airbnb and share your experience with #BelongAnywhere)

It is never too early to be thinking on Art Week in Miami. Design Miami/ Basel announces new Design Commission and Design At Large for 2014 fair.

Every June, in advance of the Winter fair in Miami, Design Miami/Basel commission a large piece by an architect/ designer in the early part of their career. Jamie Zigelbaum's Triangular Series, suspended from the ceiling of the Basel Exhibition Centre blur the boundary between "life and non-life." The piece is of 59 large tetrahedra throughout the space. They are made of see-through acrylic.

Design At Large's inaugural edition will be a curated display of large-scale design installations around the center. The pieces will come from proposals solicited from participating galleries and aimed at reflecting the diversity of the fair. Dennis Freedman, Creative Director of Barneys New York, will curate.
