James Scott's "Future Ruin" Opens July 25 At ArtNowNY (NYC)

James Scott's Future Ruin, a solo exhibit, runs from July 25 to August 17, 2013 at ArtNowNY (548 W 28th Street 2nd Floor). There will be an opening reception Friday, July 25 from 6 to 10 p.m.

The exhibit is new work using different mediums; painting, photography and drawing. Scott was trained as an architect and uses a different process for his drawings. He uses cutting, stenciling and overlapping paterns to create multifacted planes. Part of the aim here is to create a bridge between drawing and sculpture. It is probably a good idea to see these in person as flat images are unlikely to do them justice.

Scott, born in New Haven, CT, is now based in New York. He received a BA in Architecture and Fine Arts from RISD.

"Image-Painting-Text" By Samuel Stabler, William Buchina And Kyle Kouri Opens At Garis & Hahn (NYC) July 30, 2013

7/19/2013

Picture
Image-Painting-Text runs from July 30 to August 31, 2013 at Garis & Hahn (263 Bowery, New York City). There will be an opening reception from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 30.

The group exhibit features new pieces by Samuel Stabler, William Buchina and Kyle Kouri. Stabler provides the "image" part of the exhibit, Buchina the "painting" part and Kouri the "text." The three curated the exhibit with Max Teicher. As you might expect the exhibit has a multi-disciplinary dialogue that deals with the intricacies, the comlexity in viewing and appreciating art.

The exhibit uses the structuralism of Roland Barthes but do not let that scare you away. They will not force you to read S/Z.

Neon painting/cutouts by Stabler, India ink paintings by Buchina and the writings of Kouri blend and uncover the interelation between mediums. Garis & Hahn's exhibits often focus on art that broadens the conversation about art and tries to open the art world to the broader population. I might have a couple of questions on the subject about how basing an exhibit on Barthes reaches out beyond the normal art-world devotees but it would only be a COUPLE.
