PictureIf You Have No Eye by William Kentridge
Greg Kucera Gallery (Seattle) showed work by William Kentridge and SuttonBeresCuller at Expo Chicago 2015.

Kentridge creates collages mixed with charcoal drawings AND short films based on those charcoal pieces. He is also one of a long and distinguished group of artists who has been a set designer (Kentridge is also an actor). He is originally from Johannesburg, South Africa where he lives with his wife and family.

If You Have No Eye is a linocut printed on non-archival dictionary pages. It is a collage attached with
tape to a backing sheet of Arches Cover White. The piece is an edition of 24.

SuttonBerescCuller is not a single person but a three-headed art monster have worked as a group since 2000. Their creations include performance, public projects and installation. Usually they work outside the gallery setting (or the art show setting). The space, the place, the media warp with this group. The pieces below have individual titles which I do not actually feel like listing!

PictureMadera
Gerald Peters Gallery (Santa Fe/New York) showed work by Judith Godwin at Expo Chicago 2015.

Godwin studied at the Art Students League, that incubator of so many great artists since the 1870s. She studied with Hans Hofmann and is most often associated with the abstract expressionists.

Stop and look at these pieces;abstract as they are they create different forms the more you look at them. The colors have that intimation of motion great painters achieve. These are pieces that do not allow you to look away in their presence. Both are oil on canvas. Madera is 75 x 50 inches and Maze is 46 x 52 inches.

Gallery Wendi Norris (San Francisco) showed this untitled, site-specific installation by Val Britton at Expo Chicago 2015.  Britton is a New Jersey-born artist living in San Francisco. Her work is mixed media and paper often as collages.  Britton works sometimes reference maps of various sorts. When I first saw THIS piece my instant reaction was that it looked like a series of hanging maps of nations.

She has a BFA from RISD and an MFA from California College of the Arts. She was recently commissioned to create a large piece of public art which went on display at San Francisco International Airport in the summer of 2015.

Galerie Daniel Templon (Paris, Brussels) Showed Work By Francesco Clemente, Iván Navarro And Jonathan Meese At Expo Chicago 2015

PictureFather by Francesco Clemente
Galerie Daniel Templon (Paris, Brussels) showed work by Francesco Clemente, Iván Navarro and Jonathan Meese at Expo Chicago 2015.

One striking aspect of the Daniel Templon booth was the diversity of the artists. These three show this.

Clemente was born in Naples, Italy and studied architecture--before abandoning those studies for art. His early work was on paper and latter work included murals at the Palladium night club in NYC (long ago demolished). This more recent piece, Father, is from 2007 and is oil on canvas.

Navarro is a Chilean artist. His work features neon, mirrors and light in sculptures and installations full of social and political implication. Growing up under the Pinochet regime the artist experienced politically motivated shutdowns of the electrical grid. His work is not only aimed at his homeland. His work, You Sit, You Die, includes the names of every person executed in Florida's electric chair.

Meese, a German artist, works in a multitude of media; he is a painter, sculptor, writer and performance artist.  He has also been a stage designer. His first major solo exhibition was held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami (since relocated).

Wentrup (Berlin) showed work by Florian Meisenberg at Expo Chicago 2015.

Meisenberg was born in Berlin and currently splits time between New York and Dusseldorf. I have both these pieces listed as being from the artist but looking at them I am frightened I was wrong! Please feel free to correct me. I hate it when galleries do not label individual pieces.

You can see the work yourself HERE.

Pearl Lam Galleries (Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore) showed 2015No.13 by Su Dong Ping at Expo Chicago 2015.

The artist's father was a devotee of calligraphy and handed to his son the notion that the artist (or calligrapher) should not slavishly follow tradition but let spirit and determination inform the work. You can see, from this piece, that Ping followed this advice.

His works include paint layered day after day creating these cathartic and beautiful pieces.

Hill Gallery (Birmingham, MI) showed work by John Walker at Expo Chicago 2015. There have been a number of posts here about the works--often small--by the English painter and print maker. These expressive, colorful pieces measure 12 x 9.

Every time I see pieces by Walker Iam drawn to them. If you look at his work, throughout his career you will see change, growth and different styles (and media). He is an artist you should be familiar with and you can be by hitting THIS LINK.

Hackett Mill (San Francisco) showed work by Emilio Vedova at Expo Chicago 2015.

Vedova was a self-taught artist from Venice whose early influences were the Old Masters. He was a member of the Italian resistance during World War II (and an avant- garde artist during the same period).

The piece Spagna '61 (below) was inspired by a visit to Franco's Spain, then still recovering from the bloody civil war. In part the piece is based on graffiti the artist saw on the trip.
