Julie Hedrick's Alchemy runs at Nohra Haime Gallery (730 Fifth Ave., New York)  November 18, 2014 to January 3, 2015.  The exhibit constists of oils on canvas and works on paper. The artist uses these pieces as a meditation on alchemy and its relation to gold. Alchemy, of course, focused on the transmutation of base metals into gold. But there was more to it than that, as the ability to arrive at such a transmutation was seen as the gateway to understanding life itself.

Gold is central in this work and is often at the surface of these pieces.

Hedick has shown extensively in Canada, Columbia and the USA. In addition to painting and works on paper she has been acclaimed for performance, poetry reading, set design and discussion panels.  She is originally from Toronto but now lives in Kingston, New York.

Alexander Kaletski's Solo Exhibit, Red Carpet  Runs At Anna Zorina Gallery and Mary Boone Gallery (New York)

Alexander Kaletski is subject of a new collaborative exhibit, Red Carpet at Anna Zorina Gallery (533 West 23rd St, New York) and Mary Boone Gallery (745 Fifth Ave., New York).  There is an opening reception today, from 5 to 7 p.m. today (Thursday October 30).

The latest work by Kaletski riffs on American culture--fame, celebrities and the lure of the "red carpet." His work is full of underlying commentary without falling into conceptualism. His work, as always, is witty and subtle.

Kaletski has been working as an artist for over 40 years. He began in the Soviet Union but he did not follow the "official path" for artists. He created on the sly while working as an actor. His years in the USSR led to a distaste for the color red but upon coming to the USA the color had a new connotation.

It didn't symbolize state control but entertainment, glamor, sexuality.  But is such a life of success and fame always desirable? Kaletski's pieces ask that of the viewer.
