Paul Thiebaud Gallery (San Francisco) showed work by Hadas Tal at Expo Chicago 2017.

Tal, an Israeli-born artist, creates city scapes that remind me of looking at a given city without my glasses.  There is a balance between reality and abstraction in the pieces. The style is such that you should be able to see her work and say to yourself; "That is Hadas Tal."

Galerie LeLong & Company (New York/Paris) showed work by Jane Hammond And Ursula Von Rydingsvard At Expo Chicago 2017.

Hammond works with a vast collection of found images. She takes these and "recontextualizes" them, giving them  new life and meaning. Her work uses numerous techniques. She is from Connecticut and lives in New York.

Rydingsvard is a German artist who has lived in New York City for the past 40 years. She is most known for her large-scale sculptures made from cedar beams. The piece below is obviously on a smaller scale.

Jenkins Johnson Gallery (San Francisco/ New York)  showed work by Lavar Munroe at Expo Chicago 2017.

The pieces here, both sculpture and paintings, are part of a series called Gun Dogs. The term refers to attack dogs trained to attack people on sight or command. Surely the dogs are portrayed as fearsome.

Recently I read a book by an African academic who told that one of his biggest adjustments in the USA was how people felt about dogs. In his homeland there were no lapdogs. Add to this the historical use of dogs to hunt runaway slaves and to attack civil rights protesters. The artist is asking a question; when does this become a hunt and what extent are the animals, and their masters, specifically aimed at a given demographic.

Munroe was born in the Bahamas in 1982. He has a BFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design (a school that produces so many wonderful artists) and an MFA from Washington University (St. Louis).

Rosenfeld Porcini (London) Showed Work By Girjesh Kumar Singh At Expo Chicago 2017

Rosenfeld Porcini (London) showed work by Girjesh Kumar Singh at Expo Chicago 2017.

Singh creates art from broken walls. You can see brick and mortar on some individual pieces. Each of these faces is a true character and each seems to capture some spark of humanity.

Singh, from India, deals with issues of migration and identity. Part of the point of making these sculptures our of buildings is the artist's belief that we all come from the same structure, we have the same root identity, even if we migrate.

Edward Cella Art and Architecture showed work by Jennifer Bolande at Expo Chicago 2017.

This piece, Mountain, is photographs on plywood. It is a monumental piece. One interesting thing is that, in person, the wood doesn't look like plywood but rather something fancier.

Bolande is from Cleveland and attended the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Her first solo show was 35 years ago.

Tandem Press (Madison) showed work by Alison Saar at Expo Chicago 2017.  Saar works in drawings, sculpture and, of course, prints.

Saar comes from a family of artists. Her mother Betye, at the age of 91, is still working in Los Angeles (she is mostly known for assemblage and printmaking work). Father, Richard, was an illustrator and conservation. Her sister, Lezley, is also an artist.

Her work deals with sexism, ageism, racism and being bi-racial in America. These are prints but she works in other media as well. There are pieces from the artist in some of the finest museum collections in the world including (but not limited to); the Hirschhorn, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

These pieces, Breach and Stench,  are intaglio on stained cottonshop rag.

Galerie Frank Elbaz (Paris/Dallas) showed work by Matthew Wong at Expo Chicago 2017. Wong is a Canadian artist based in Edmonton.

He has a BA in Anthropology from the University of Michigan and an MFA in photography from City University of Hong Kong School of Creative Media.

When you spend some time looking at Wong's work you see a wide variety of styles and technique. Many pieces I came across were more abstract and more expressionistic than these. Wong has an arsenal of artistic skill.

You can see more work at the gallery website or HERE.

Connorsmith (Washington D.C.) Showed Work By Wilmer Wilson IV At Expo Chicago 2017

Connorsmith (Washington D.C.) showed work by Wilmer WIlson IV at Expo Chicago 2017.

Wilson's pieces are covered with what I assumed were some sort of staple. The work  takes on wildly different characteristics depending on your angle and distance  while viewing.  They are unique and require close examination. There is a roughness to them but at the same time an elegance.

His work is about the marginalization of the black body in our society. These pieces obscure the bodies of the black people in them.  He uses old lotto tickets, event fliers and other bits of urban detritus in his work as well. Look close and you will see them in these pieces.

This isn't the only sort of work Wilson does; his work is varied and you can see more HERE.
