PictureByzantine Neo-Platonic Rectangle #21, #16 and #25

by Thomas Lanigan-Schmidt

Pavel Zoubok Gallery (New York) showed work by Thomas Lanigan-Schmidt and Mark Wagner at Miami Project 2014.

Lanigan-Schmidt's work has been widely exhibited and written about going back over 40 years.  He attended both the School of Visual Arts and Pratt Institute.

Wagner's work is literally made of money.  It is a currency collage. From a distance you don't see the money but up close it becomes readily apparent. This also isn't just a gimmick, it is a really beautiful. Money, by itself, is a sort of art.

Kirk Hopper Fine Art (Dallas) showed work by Carlos Donjuan and Noriko Shinohara at Scope Miami Beach 2014.

Donjuan is a long-time graffiti artist.
His art deals with music, street fashion and cultural change. These portraits have obvious classical elements as well as current cultural motifs. Donjuan is working on his MFA at University of Texas (San Antonio).

Shinohara
was born in Japan and moved to New York City at the age of 19. She studied at the Art Students League and Pratt. At around this time she met Ushio Shinohara, already a well known artist. The two artists remained together to this day and were the subject of the documentary, Cutie and the Boxer.

Red Truck Gallery (New Orleans) Showed Art By Jason D'Aquino, Chris Roberts-Antieau And Tom Haney At Scope Miami Beach 2014

PictureRetro-Fit by Tom Haney
Red Truck Gallery (New Orleans) showed art by Jason D'Aquino, Chris Roberts-Antieau and Tom Haney at Scope Miami Beach 2014.

Red Truck Gallery is always one of the most interesting at Scope (or elsewhere). This is in part for the distinctiveness of the artists.

Antieau-Roberts has her own gallery in New Orleans these days. Her pieces are not just static (and beautiful) pieces hanging on a wall. They are stories; they are alive. In fact, they are more alive and more interesting than many people out their drawing breath right now. These pieces are fabric (or deer heads with fabric).

D'Aquino's pieces need a close look (hence the photos from two distances). They are miniatures done on matchbooks; the detail is exquisite.

Baik Song Gallery (Seoul) showed these pieces at Scope Miami Beach 2014.

They are something of a mystery since I didn't get the name of the artist for some reason. Also? The gallery website seems to be down.

Browsing around the internet for more information proved less than fruitful.

If anyone has an idea please leave a comment. I thought these were interesting and wanted to post despite the dearth of information....

A Small Gallery (Ostend) Showed Work By Avner Sher At Scope Miami Beach 2014

PictureMirror
{a small gallery} (Ostend) showed work by Avner Sher at Scope Miami Beach 2014.

Sher is an Israel-based artist/architect who scratches, burns and otherwise damages wood and cork boards to create  graffiti-like images. These creations, however, seem somehow old, almost like hieroglyphics. There is also something reminiscent of Jean Debuffet (just a bit).

Sher doesn't just beat up on wood and cork--the burning and scratching is the beginning. He then brings out the images he sees post mangling of the wood.

Vogelsang Gallery (Brussels) Showed Art By Gregory Watin And Adrien Boyer At Scope Miami Beach 2014

PictureRequiem by Adrien Boyer
Vogelsang Gallery (Brussels) showed art by Gregory Watin and Adrien Boyer at Scope Miami Beach 2014.

Watin, from France, creates art with an "urban" style. His urban style isn't necessarily right out of the inner cities of America but urban nonetheless. He begins with a photograph and builds upon it. He uses a bright pallet and each painting takes up to half a year to dry.

Boyer is a Paris-based photographer. His photos have a painterly style to them. You have to loo hard at them to realize they are actually photographs.

The Stairwell Vortex (I hope you can't see up my roses)

by Andrew Paul Woolbright
Yellow Peril Gallery (Providence) showed work by Andrew Paul Woolbright and Greg Haberny at Scope Miami Beach 2014.

Woolbright attended both the School of the Art Institute (Chicago) and the Rhode Island School of Design. He drips paint and captures his subjects in times of trasition (in this one you need to look close to see the figures). The artist often uses himself and his wife as subjects in the work.

Haberny, we've written about from other galleries and did an interview with when he was the only artist shown by Lyons Wier Gallery at Art Miami 2014. His work is bright and messy and childlike; it also has a great aesthetic and sense of humor.

55Bellechasse (Paris) Showed Work By Pascal Vochelet At Scope Miami Beach 2014

PicturePunk Attitude
55 Bellchasse (Paris) showed work by Pascal Vochelet at Scope Miami Beach 2014.

Vochelet lives and works in Marseilles, France. If you look past the head you will note these critters are also clowns. Some of his other work is more colorful and chaotic but these might be the most memorable. They are cute; how often do you see cute art that isn't annoying?

I could have written "whimsical" instead of "cute" but that would have been covering up intent. Another thing about these pieces? If you had one hanging in your home it would be an instant conversation starter, even with the most laconic of guests.

This piece, Sensual journey, literally shows a door opening to a time gone by or maybe it is a utopian future.
