Not reading Portuguese I was unable to find out much more about the artist or the galleria.
But the pieces WERE striking.

Accola Griefen Gallery (New York) showed work by Judy Pfaff and Mary Grigoriadis At Context Miami 2013. Pfaff's work uses encaustic and a variety of papers. The artist is originally from London and received her BFA from Washington University (St. Louis) and an MFA from Yale. She is best known for her installation pieces but she has also worked with prints where she has used things like vegetation and maps (etcetera). I assume these pieces are from this part of her work. She has also worked creating sets for theater productions. Grigoriadis uses oil and acrylic on linen in her two smaller pieces and oil on canvas in her larger pieces. She was also a founding member of A.I.R. Gallery--the first female art collective in the USA, founded in 1972. Her work is often brightly colored decorative patterns. She is part of the group of artists referred to as Pattern & Decorative artists. Find out details on both artists at the gallery website link above. Blunt Gallery (Toronto) showed work by Gillian Iles at Context Miami 2013. You can find out more about the artist HERE. Find out more about the gallery HERE. You can only get there from here, eight paintings, is by Iles. There are other pieces (paintings and sculptures) by the same title as well that include sculpture. Her work often incorporates sculpture. You can read more about the philosophy behind Iles work on her website. I felt uncomfortable paraphrasing. Doing so might make the "whys" involved in her work seem the same as every other artist. Best to check her own words on her own website. This piece, mostly of "parts" of different animals and it was difficult to think not focus in on one of the "pieces" making up the whole piece. Iles was not the only artist shown by Blunt. She was, however, the one who translated to photos best. Lyle O. Reitzel Arte Contemporaneo showed work by Edouard Duval-Carrie, a Haitian-born artist who was, in part educated in Canada. He has been the subject of numerous exhibitions worldwide and also several monographs related to his work have been published. This piece, River Flotsam, is mixed media on aluminum in a frame created by the artist. The gallery first opened in Santa Domingo as a home for new underground artists. The aim was to find the new and extravagant. Aysmmetrik (New York) had work by Ran Ortner last year at Context. At Context 2013 they had only Ortner. It is often repeated in these pieces that the photos do not do the art justice. That is more than true with these pieces--especially when it comes to size (the two single pieces are 84 X60). But somehow some part of these pieces DOES come through in the photos. You get a sense of light in Ortner's work and the realism. Talking about Ortner's work last year gallery owner (they now have a physical location) Jeremy Hu talked about how the artist created his own pigments and how the artist was a surfer. It is easy to see how these pieces were inspired. Anyone who spent time in the ocean knows there are different ways the sea can appear and that it looks wildly different in different locations and times of year. Sometimes waves roll in, sometimes the sea looks like a washing machine. These images have that "washing machine" feel. These works seem particularly appropriate to South Florida. The work is beautiful. Look at the close up below. These complicated pieces should appeal to anyone, any collector, who loves the ocean. They are abstract and real and utterly unique. Others paint the ocean but not like this. Find out more on Ortner HERE. AWOL Gallery (76/78 Ossington Ave, Toronto) showed work by Stewart Jones, Dmitry Goriachkin and Denis Mikhaylov at Aqua Art Fair 2013 (Miami) The gallery represents a fairly eclectic group of artists stylistically speaking. In their roughly 15 years of existence they've held over 100 exhibitions, which is impressive. AWOL is not just an exhibition space though. They offer artists affordable studio space as well. Jones has a diploma in Painting and Drawing from the Ontario College Of Art. He is also a graduate of the Sheridan College 's classical animation program. He has worked extensively making videos with independent musicians. Kim Foster Gallery Showed Works By Antonio Petracca And Christian Faur At Context Miami 201312/23/2013 Kim Foster Gallery (529 West 20th Street, NYC) showed pieces by Antonio Petracca and Christian Faur at Context Miami 2013. Christian Faur's Poppies is made of 19,000 hand-cast encaustic crayons. A 2012 exhibition by the artist was entitled Rods And Cones, relating the parts of the human eye to that workhorse of the elementary school, the crayon. It is a clever concept and is brilliantly executed. You can see more HERE. Antonio Petracca's Kiss Me is oil paint on canvas on wood. Petracca's recent exhibit 10 was his response to the tragedy of 9/11. He was, himself, displaced by the attacks. The reaction of some reminded him of prejudice suffered in an earlier time by Italian Americans. His work uses different media and focus as much on rebuilding as on destruction. Find out more HERE. Paralelo Gallery, in Sao Paulo, opened in 2010. The gallery is contemporary and focused on the current trends in art. Part of the gallery's purpose is to make connections between Brazilian art/artists and artists of the rest of what we call "Latin America." Luiz Hermano lives and works in São Paulo. Early on he studied philosophy and currently works in both engraving and drawing. His work has been shown around the world, at the Seoul Biennial (1983), Havana Pan American Biennal (1986) and many others. His work is held in prestigious collections around the world as well. He uses toys and trinkets and other "common" objects in his work. These photos and videos do not even come close to capturing the pieces. Mercedes Viegas, a museologist, opened this gallery in 2000. Obviously she represents and promotes Brazilian artists. The artists shown by the gallery (not just at this fair but in general) range from the internationally known to artists just beginning their careers. You can find out more about the gallery HERE (if you read Portuguese). You can, at the very least, see more of the artists. As you can see from the photos the gallery has a variety of styles. Jaqueline Vojta's large, single colored, highly textured piece is quite a contrast with the other artists in both scale and style. by Julio Villani by Vania Mignone
Ghostprint Gallery (Richmond, VA) and J. Fergeson Gallery (Farmville, VA) showed their artists together at Aqua Art Fair 2013. The two galleries had a great selection of artists. Considering this was a two gallery "booth" the artists fit together remarkably well. It is always great when after hours of looking at art (for a few days) and you come to see work that makes you think "Well, I haven't seen anything like this yet." These artists evoked that response. Susan Jamison and Matt Lively are from J. Fergeson Gallery. Alicia Suarez, Juan Perdiguero, Josh George and Sterling Hundley are from Ghostprint Gallery. Find out more about the artists at the gallery sites. |
