Octavia Art Gallery (4532 Magazine Street, New Orleans) opens Joel Pickford: Photographs of Southern Louisiana, on May 4. 2013. The exhibit runs until May 25. There will be an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday May 11.

For the past ten years Pickford has photographed Southern Louisiana documenting history, the natural environs and the area’s culture.  He used a 5x7 view camera and a 35mm. The photos have a dreamlike, haunting quality but are still real.

This is Pickford’s first solo exhibit with the gallery.

Jamie Adams' "The Falls" Opens May 3, 2013 At David Klein Gallery, Birmingham, Michigan

Jamie Adams surreal works (in the literal rather than the art sense of the word) are the subject of an exhibit soon to open at David Klein Gallery in Birmingham, Michigan.

The exhibit is entitled The Falls opens May 3 and runs until June 8, 2013. There will be an artist reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 3.

Adams has a BFA from Carnegie-Mellon University and an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

The artist writes (at jamesadams.com) that his figurative work is mostly utobiographical and a sort of personal memoir and a response, from inside, to the world and life in general. Themes include love, desire and identity.

Chad Buck Memorial Exhibition To Open At Brian Gross Fine Art May 2, 2013

is set to open a memorial exhibit for Chad Buck. The exhibit opens May 2 and runs until June 29, 2013. There will be an opening reception from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday May 4, 2013.

Buck passed away this past February in Mexico and the exhibit will celebrate the artist's work and life. He was a noted San Francisco Bay-area printmaker and painter. He worked for over 30 years in the area. Newer works--abstracts--will be shown. Buck used unusual materials in his work such as enamal on burlap. His pieces are vibrant and expressive.

Buck, originally from Idaho, received his MFA from BYU. His work has been exhibited worldwide. He was the recipient of the Pollack-Krasner Foundation Grant. He had two studios, one in Oakland and the other in Puerto Vallarta.

Derrick Velasquez' Eighty Layer Cake opens at Pentimenti Gallery (145 North Second St.Philadelphia) April 29 and runs until June 1, 2013. There will be a artist reception from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, May 3, 2013.

These mixed media exhibit will include photos, 13 wall pieces and a draped structure installation. In his Untitled series (two shown here) uses acrylic, hardwoods and marine vinyle to make natural and organic forms.

The also untitled installation (draped structure) is inspired by the act of driving over bridges. He taes that language that exists in a bridge and references the engineering and physics fo the structure--a form different from organic forms like human bodies.

Velasquez has a BA from the University of California, Santa Barbara and an MFA from Ohio State University.

Andreas Eriksson's First U.K. Solo Show Opens April 27 At Stephen Friedman Gallery

Stephen Friedman Gallery (11 Old Burlington Street, London) is set to open an exhibit, Coincidental Mapping, by Swedish artist, Andreas Erikkson. The exhibit will be the artist's first solo show in the United Kingdom and runs from April 27 to May 25, 2013

Eriksson's work consists of paintings, tapestries, photographs and sculptures. His work reates to his everyday life and the natural surroundings in Scandinavia (his studio is far out in the countryside). His work is both figurative and abstract. The work is in a descendent of the Northern Romantic Tradition. You may feel a kinship in style to Klee and Kandinsky in his pieces.

This exhibit includes new paintings and tapestries.

FEAST Projects presents a new exhibition by Xie Lei, Everything And Nothing. There is an opening reception from 6 to 9 p.m. on May 3, 2013. The exhibition runs from May 3 through June 7, 2013 at Unit 307, 3/F, Harbour Industrial Centre, 10 Lee Hing Street, Ap Lei Chau, Hong Kong.

Xie Lei is originally from Huainan, China. He currently lives in Paris.

This exhibit is part of Le French May 2013 program. FEAST and the Consulate of France in Hong Kong and Macau are co-presenting.

Jonathan Fineberg To Sign "A Troublesome Subject, The Art Of Robert Arneson" At Brian Gross Fine Art (San Francisco)

Jonathan Fineberg's,  A Troublesome Subject, The Art Of Robert Arneson, came out in March from the University of California Press. Fineberg will be at Brian Gross Fine Art (49 Geary Street, 5th Fl. San Francisco).

Fineberg has a pHd in Art History from Harvard. But his academic interests go beyond art history and into psychoanalysis.  He is a fascinating writer, academic and artist in his own right. Find out more about him at jonathanfineberg.com.

Arneson was a sculptor and professor of ceramics at the University of California at Davis.  His work was both drawing and ceramics and he often used his own image in his work.  His work is in some of the most important collections in the world including; the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Chicago Art Institute, the Hirshhorn Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Whitney Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and man others.

"Jonathan Bonner: New Work" Exhibit At Ellen Miller Gallery, Boston

Jonathan Bonner: New Work went on display April 18 at Ellen Miller Gallery (38 Newbury St. Boston). There is an opening reception from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2013. The exhibit runs until May 28. Bostonians who like art should have a look. It has, I know, been an awful week in the city. All the best to you Boston.

The works re sculptures made of archival plastic in white, black or red and drawings of outlines of parts of Bonner’s body that are repeated single, syllable words. The words are in pen and ink. Different types of work but the theme is identical.

Bonner has work in collections including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Carnegie Museum of Art, MFA Boston, the Brooklyn Museum and the Detroit Museum of Art. His work, sculpture installation and works on paper, have been the subject of 40 solo shows.

Varnish Fine Art (16 Jessie Street, #C120)  in San Francisco has been around for ten years. They are celebrating this fact from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 20. The exhibit celebrating the gallery's first decade runs until May 18, 2013.

And they are serving tacos.

The exhibit features artists who have shown, and some who have not, at Varnish. Jennybird Alcantara, Robert Bowen, Victor Castillo, Chris Mars, Christian Rex Van Minnen, Lee Harvey Roswell, Isabel Samaras, Ron Garrigues, Brian Goggin, Jessica Joslin, Lucien Shapiro, Ransom & Mitchell, Rob Reger and Chuck Sperry will all have work on display.

A pretty impressive and varied list of artists. Happy tenth Varnish Fine Art.
