Freedman Fitzpatrick (Los Angeles) Showed Work By Amelie Von Wulffen At Art Basel Miami Beach 2016

Freedman Fitzpatrick (Los Angeles) showed work by Amelie Von Wulffen At Art Basel Miami Beach 2016. Von Wulffen's work is startling and otherworldly. I wonder if the artist would take offense if I noted an initial impression? I thought of the cartoon Squidbillies. When chatting about fine art that is usually not an observation you find tossed about. Of course these works are different but they have a gothic sort of humor. Here is a bit of an incoherent piece from the NY Times.

Zeno X Gallery (Antwerp) showed work by Kim Jones At Art Basel Miami Beach 2016.  Jones is a California -born artist currently living in New York City. He works in drawing, performance and sculpture. War Drawing Jacket is a jacket, wood, acrylic and ink. While the lower, untitled, piece is acrylic and ink on board.

Jones work, over 30 years, often refers to two experiences in his life--the first being confined to a wheelchair for part of his pre-teen years, second his service in the military during the Vietnam War.  This is a vast oversimplification of the underpinnings of his complex pieces. You can find out more HERE.

Off Vendome (New York)  showed work by Jeanette Mundt at Art Basel Miami Beach 2016. Mundt is a New York City-based artist who has a BFA from Pratt. she has been in both group and solo exhibitions in Europe and the USA for the past 8 years or so.

There is a range of styles in the pieces. Keep in mind what I see may well have nothing whatever to do with the artist's intent. When I looked at the upper piece I recalled old Japanese prints I've seen while the lower may have a whiff of that I thought more of modern graphic novel art.  There are stories in both pieces; again, the story I might see could have nothing to do with the artists intention. Art is, of course, partly about what WE bring to it when we react to it and think about it.

Andrew Edlin Gallery (New York) showed work by Eugene Von Bruenchenhein at Art Basel Miami Beach 2016. The artist was from Wisconsin where he lived and worked for most of his "career." I put quotes around career because he seems to have mostly created in private. He was a baker by trade but he and his wife did photographs (she as model, he as photographer). He also painted and created sculpture.

He was not exhibited or acknowledged during his lifetime--which is one of the vile things about the art world. If his work had been brought to many galleries and museums during his lifetime, his lack of a pedigree would have likely precluded exhibition. Self taught "outsider" artists are often acknowledged after they die. While he would be happy his work was being shown at such a significant Art Show? It would have been nicer if he had received the financial rewards for it himself.

Von Breunchenhein thought he was a great artist. He was right. Find out more HERE. This site is also looking for images of the artist's work.

Berggruen Gallery (San Francisco) showed work by John Alexander at Art Basel Miami Beach 2016.

Alexander hails from Beaumont, Texas and spent his formative years camping and fishing in the area. This is east Texas which is geographically closer to Louisiana with it's bayous and forests than the more open areas in the west of the vast state. He attended Lamar University in Beaumont. He currently splits time between NYC and the East Hamptons.

There is something almost classical about his work and yet he also makes the realistic look like an abstract explosion of color. Of course, nature does that too. Find out more at www.johnalexanderstudios.com.

Galeria Elvira Gonzalez (Madrid) showed work by Juan Muñoz at Art Basel Miami Beach 2016.

Munoz, from Madrid, is best known as a sculptor but he first studied printmaking in London in the 1970s.  He also studied at Pratt before moving back to Spain to curate. It wasn't too long after his return to his homeland that he took up sculpture.

This piece is, of course, not a sculpture. Entitled, Raincoat Drawing, this is mixed media on canvas. There are apparently numerous pieces with this title.

Munoz died at the age of 48 in 2001. Find out more on the artist HERE.

Galerie Thomas (Munich)
showed work by Andre Lhote at Art Basel Miami Beach 2016. Lhote began working in wood carving and later studied decorative sculpture at Ecole des Beaux-Arts (Bordeaux). His painting began as something he did in his spare time.

After moving to Paris in 1906 he apparently began to have more of a focus on the medium. In 1910 he had his first solo exhibition. Lhote was also a teacher of and writer on art.
