Work by Carlos Garaicoa, winner of the 2013 EFG Bank-ArtNexus Prize, was featured at Pinta Miami 2016.

Garaicoa, born in Havana, uses a variety of media--sculpture, photography, installation, video, drawings and even pop-up books--in his work. That work focuses on urbanism, architecture and history. When you look at the piece above you might feel it is a straight photograph but look at the detail piece below and you see more.

Roberts & Tilton (Los Angeles) showed work by Betye Saar at Art Basel 2016. Saar is known for both printmaking and assemblage. Her work is often political and as often deals with racism and misogyny. She has a B.A. in design from UCLA (and did post-graduate work at numerous schools and organizations, including the American Film Institute.

Michael Werner showed work by Markus Lüpertz at Art Basel Miami Beach 2016. Lüpertz is an writer, educator, painter, sculptor and, to add a curve on his resume, a jazz pianist. Wouldn't you love to hear the guy who painted these pieces play some jazz?

Also, don't the paintings make you think of sculpture? Isn't there a quality to them that calls to mind similar pieces as sculpture?

Stevenson (Cape Town/ Johannesburg) showed work by Zander Blom at Art Basel 2016. Blom, from South Africa, lives and works in Cape Town.

The artist's work seems to use color and patterns to create cheerful imagery that leaps out as if it is three dimensional. They range from seeming busy to more sedate (the top piece versus the below). But there is minimal difference between the pieces--small differences in the work make big differences in our perception.

Blom has had solo shows in New York, Germany, South Africa and at Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah and Atlanta, Georgia. He has been part of numerous group shows as well.

Essex Street (New York) showed work by Chadwick Rantanen and Vern Blosum at Art Basel Miami Beach 2016.

Rantanen creates using mass produced materials. A wide variety of items are used in various pieces. Below turkey decoys are deployed in the piece, Turkey Spread. The other piece? I didn't get the name of but it is seen in a video and still photo.

Blosum isn't actually a real person but an artist, perhaps, irritated by the proliferation (like a fungus) of "Pop Art," who submitted work to a show at MoMa. You can read about it HERE. This article doesn't get deeply into how tired Pop Art has become; paint Darth Vader with a lollipop and sell it to someone with too much cash and too little taste? Yeah, it happens.

But an artist who makes fun of this with paintings that are as good as 90 percent of those who embrace the "genre"? Bravo! There is irony that, when the artist reveals who they are Pop Art lovers will embrace them.
