Leslie Feeley Fine Art (New York) showed work by Friedel Dzubas at Art Miami 2018. Dzubas was born in Germany but came to the USA in his early 20s. In the early 1950s he was being shown in New York shows. He even shared a studio with Helen Frankenthaler. His work ranges from Abstract Expressionism to Color Field Painting and beyond. He was also a teacher (Cornell and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston). Dzubas also was the recipient of two consecutive Guggenheim Fellowships. These pieces are from the 1970s. Galerie Von Vertes (Zurich) showed work by Kazuo Shiraga at Art Miami 2018. Shiraga was known for his mud paintings where he, essentially used his whole body as a brush making indentations in clay. He also spent years creating "performance paintings" that were mostly composed using his feet. Years ago I recall a show at the M CA Chicago called Destroy the Picture: Painting the Void 1949-1962. The show featured Post-World War II artists who basically attacked their work, slashing and bashing it as a reaction to the mayhem that had just ended and the destruction evident in their countries. Shiraga was one of the artists in this show. It ran in 2013. photos by Boyd Ogle II P.P.O.W (New York) showed work by Robins F. Williams and Ramiro Gomez at Art Basel 2018. Gomez, from San Bernadino, creates work depicting working people, the folks who are the backbone of our society. It is a little more than vaguely ironic to see them on display at Art Basel. It is also vaguely heartening. We've written about the artist before (here). You can also check out his website HERE. Williams, a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, is based in Brooklyn. This piece is a little cheerier than other pieces you may see. Many are also more realistic (stretching the notion of "realism" on my part here). There is always a whiff of magic in her work. Even son, there is something real even in the oddest representations by Williams. You can find out and seem more at www.robinfwilliams.com. photo by Boyd Ogle II Perrotin (New York) showed work by Laurent Grasso at Art Basel Miami Beach 2018. Grasso is a painter, sculptor and photographer. He was born in France and lives and works between Paris and New York. This piece, Studies into the Past, is oil on canvas and reminds of the Renaissance being transported to a New York disco in 1977 (which is amazing). Galleria Franco Noero (Turin) Showed Sculpture By Francesco Vezzoli At Art Basel Miami Beach 20181/17/2019 photo by Boyd Ogle II Galleria Franco Noero (Turin) showed sculpture by Francesco Vezzoli at Art Basel Miami Beach 2018. He was educated at Central Saint Martins School of Art (London) Vezzoli is an Italian artist and experimental filmmaker whose work (in various media) recycles the work of previous artists. This Roman marble is one example while his trailer for a remake of Caligula is another. Not ALL of his work is this sort of thing but it is certainly a significant portion. The Caligula trailer includes Helen Mirren, Milla Jovovich, Karen Black and Gore Vidal. Other video pieces include Sharon Stone, Cate Blanchette and Diane Wiest. Apparently, lots of people want to be in his short films. Mary-Anne Martin Fine Art (New York) Showed Work By Maria Izquierdo At Art Basel Miami Beach 20181/17/2019 photos by Boyd C. Ogle II Mary-Anne Martin Fine Art (New York) showed work by Maria Izquierdo at Art Basel Miami Beach 2018. Izquierdo was a Mexican paintier. A number of sources say she is the first Mexican woman to have her work exhibited in the United States (a bit hard to verify this). She was born in Jalisco and grew up in various small towns before moving to Mexico City. These oil on canvas pieces vary somewhat in style. Hacia al paraiso was painted in 1954, a year before the artist's death, while Naturaleza viva was from eight years earlier. It is curious that the background in the earlier painting clearly resembles the work in the later piece. photo by Boyd Ogle II Plan B (Berlin/Ckuj) showed work by Iulia Nistor at Art Basel Miami Beach 2018. Nistor is Romanian artist who lives and works in Germany. In addition to her education as a painter she holds a pHd in Philosophy. She creates, in part, via subtraction. She removes color from the wet paintings applying paper (I am not sure if this technique was used on this untitled piece). hotos by Boyd Ogle II Walden (Buenos Aires) showed work by Feliciano Centurion at Art Basel Miami Beach 2018. Centurion, from Paraguay, is not well known outside of Latin American and it is heartening Walden showed work by the late artist at Art Basel;s "Survey" section. His work was also shown at Bienal de São Paulo. Centurion was a painter and these pieces are embroidery and crochet on blankets, pillows and other household items. If you search around you might find images of his erotic themed paintings and other work infused with a wry sense of humor. You can find out more at felicianocenturion.com and in this excellent article in the Financial Times. photos by Boyd Ogle II Peres Projects (Berlin) showed work by Manuel Solano at Art Basel Miami Beach 2018. Solano is an unusual artist. He is blind. He lost his sight as a result of an infection related to HIV. Since 2014 he has created pieces that he will never see. These pieces are acrylic on unstretched canvas. There is nothing in these pieces that indicates the artist cannot see. You can find out more at www.manuel-solano.com. |
