The works here are small. The Hut is on canvas and the others are gouache on cardboard. I believe all of the cardboard pieces are untitled.
I am not 100 percent certain but I believe these were shown by Gallerie Karsten Greve.
Hut Gideon Rubin was born in Israel and educated in the USA and Britain. He received his BFA from the School of Visual Art in NY and his MFA from Slade School of Fine Art, University College in London. He has had solo exhibitions in Germany, France, England, Israel and the USA. The works here are small. The Hut is on canvas and the others are gouache on cardboard. I believe all of the cardboard pieces are untitled. I am not 100 percent certain but I believe these were shown by Gallerie Karsten Greve.

Untitled (Captiva) Cy Twombly had several pieces at the wonderful pieces shown by Galerie Karsten Greve (Cologne, Paris, St Moritz) at Expo Chicago. One of the best things about Twombly is how some of his work enrages people. I have heard the time honored "MY KIDS COULD DO THAT" line whispered or shouted at his work (I have also heard it applied to artists as divergent as Jackson Pollock and Romero Britto). It is never accurate but it always amuses me. Twombly often painted on paper and referred to mythology in his work. Sometimes the works are like calligraphy; sometimes they DO have a child like quality. Twombly was also a sculptor of note. For those who are critical of his work have company. In his early years in the 50s and 60s there were some scathing reviews of his work. That, of course, happens to everyone who is ahead of their time. Untitled 1973 is composed of drawing paper, scotch tape, wax and crayon on paper.
Landau Fine Art's website states, upfront, what they are all about-- "Only Master Works." Their booth at Expo Chicago verified that statement beyond doubt. Works displayed included a series, Aggregation, by Chun Kwang Young. Also on display were works by Joan Miró , Joseph Maria Aviles, Andre Derain, Pablo Picasso and Amadeo Modigliani. The gallery is located in Montreal. Young's, Aggregation (with various #s and colors to designate which piece is which) are mixed media on mulberry paper (I think). These are just some of the paintings in a series with numerous versions. These are stunning. One of the points of this section is to introduce people to new artists--or artist's new to them. Most art aficionados will be aware of Miró and possibly Derain. The first painting below is Femme by Miró and the second is Bateaux sur la plage à Collioure by Derain. The artist behind the three works below should need no introduction, even to someone who knows the names of one or two artists. The two smaller works are Homme Assis et Beltier and Le Peintre by Picasso. I am almost certainly spelling the first wrong. I apologize to Picasso.
The larger painting below is magnificent. Les Dormeurs is a large and magnificent piece. It makes one tremble to image the cost of such a painting. Alexander Kaletski's Cardboard Cafe At Dillon Gallery, New York City, Opens October 4, 20129/28/2012 Alexander Kaletski was the subject of a long interview after last year's Art Basel (his work was shown at Art Miami). He is a painter, actor, writer and more. In the interview he talked about how, after coming to the USA he became fascinated with something we throw away--cardboard.
Read all about it HERE. And be sure to see this exhibit if you are in NYC at Dillon Gallery. Haunch of Venison (London & New York) has the best gallery name ever. All galleries should name themselves after meat (or even lunchmeat..."Slice of Bratwurst" for instance). In addition to having a great name the gallery had, possibly, the most impressive collection of art at Expo Chicago. One of the artists on display was Gunther Uecker. The piece, Nageledre 1979, is pictured above and below as a close up. Uecker, from Germany, and was a member of the avant-garde group ZERO. In the late 50s he was at the forefront of the movement to rejuvenate art (it is not a coincidence that this same period is when German filmmaking came alive again). Uecker is, indeed, a filmmaker. He works in a slew of media and as his career progressed he preferred to use natural materials. His work is at some of the finest modern museums in the world including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Tate Modern, Georges Pompidou Center and many others. His work was shown by other galleries as well and some of those pieces will come up later. Another piece shown by Haunch of Venison was Chiharu Shlota's State of Being (Children's Dress) 2007. This haunting piece was not easy to capture in a photo so I opted to try with video. Shiota was born in Osaka and now lives and works in Berlin. This work is similar to another, Stairway, shown at a solo show in Kiel, Germany. Find out more about the artist and see more work at www.chiharu-shiota.com. Ged Quinn is an English artist and the photo below doesn't do his work justice. These photos never do but you should get enough to want to know and see more from the artist. His work has been featured in magazines like Frieze and shown by galleries (in addition to Haunch of Venison) such as, Saatchi Gallery and Stephen Friedman Gallery.
by Nicole Eisenman (I think) Leo Koenig Inc, out of Brooklyn, opened in 1999. Koenig, from the beginning worked with young artists as well as established artists. A year after opening the gallery moved to Tribeca and then to Soho. Finally, in 2005 the gallery moved to 545 West 23rd Street in Chelsea. The gallery mainly works with scupltors and painters. One such painter, Nicole Eisenman, was prominent in the gallery's display at Expo Chicago. I cleverly didn't write down the name of the paintings--in the photo or on the shaky handed video. Go to the gallery webpage to see more, leokoenig.com. I always screw up a few of the names of the works here and there. by Roland Flexner D'Amelio Gallery is located at 525 West 22nd Street in New York City and they were the first gallery (if you are the sort who moves clockwise) at Expo Chicago. Roland Flexner (www.rolandflexner.com) was one of the artists displayed. Curiously I wrote down a series of small works by him were gouache on paper thinking, "Wow, that doesn't look like gouache." And, indeed, it seems to be graphite (liquid graphite). Regardless, they are lovely pieces (all untitled). The photos here do not do his work justice and you should have a look at them at the gallery or artist websites. Flexner will be part of an exhibit at the Indianapolis Museum of Art in December, 2012. Another artist is one that I have admired since first seeing his work, Alex Katz. The piece below, Beige Ada, was shown at Expo Chicago. Katz, a native of Brooklyn, had his first show in 1954 and has had numerous solo shows, group shows and retrospectives. For more on Katz head to www.alexkatz.com. His work is so clean and deceptively "simple." But when you walk across the room and look back at his paintings they change. It isn't that they come to life at a distance--they have that close up as well. They just, well, change. They have a new life. Expo Chicago, First Year Of High End Art Show, An Impressive Selection Of Modern/Contemporary Art9/26/2012 For the non-Chicago resident it must have been disconcerting walking through Navy Pier (essentially a cheesy tourist trap) to get to the first year of Expo Chicago. But a funny thing happens about 3/4 of the way; you run into the permanent exhibit of stained glass housed at the pier. I dare you to not stop and look. It really sets a mood appropriate to a fine art show. Add to that an impressive group of galleries and artists and a day’s worth of looking, and hopefully purchasing, art should follow. Expo Chicago featured galleries from around the world, mostly displaying works by established artists. There was less outsider art and street art than was usually on display at Expo Chicago's predecessor in Chicago (the now defunct Art Chicago/Next). The show included several large installation pieces—works in themselves or “props” for performance pieces—throughout. Some of these are pictured here. Over the next few days we will post pieces on the galleries from Expo Chicago as well as more on Expo Chicago itself. Stay tuned. The Foundation for Art and Preservation in Embassies (FAPE) recently announced two contributions to the cause. One is a donation of six screenprints by Jackson Pollock (from The Pollock-Krasner Foundation) and the other is eight photographs by Lee Friedlander (a gift from the artist). The former have been installed at the U.S. Embassy in Berlin and the latter at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in New York City. The collection at the embassy in Berlin now includes 65 works and two installations. The Friedlander pieces join works by 50 other American artists. The Pollock images seen here are all untitled and from 1951. They were published in 1964 after the artist’s death. The Friedlander photos, New York City, Washington DC and Newark are from 1963, 1962 and 1962 (respectively) and are all gelatin silver prints. To find out more about FAPE head to www.fapeglobal.org.
