notions of comfort, knocked askew, 2012
frosch&portmann, who really do not capitalize the name of their gallery, present Baltimore-based artist, Magnolia Laurie’s first show at the gallery. The show runs from September 5  through October 21, 2012. There will be a reception Wednesday, September 5  from 6 to 8 at frosch&portmann, 53 Stanton Street New York.

Laurie’s work deals with what holds us back from collapse. Politics, economics and our social dynamics all threaten to derail society. Her work isn’t about doom, however, but about hope, resiliency and endurance. The title of the exhibition is, leisure came to us before we knew what to do with it, which comes from a line in Virginia Woolf’s work, To The Lighthouse.

Laurie first made collages as a starting point for the structures in her abstract landscapes. Her work channels the man made but she doesn’t depict the “creators” in her worlds. In essence she makes a 3D model of what she intends to, ultimately, “transfer” into a 2D piece of art.

September 5 , 2012 is the night numerous galleries and other establishments have receptions and openings. For more info head HERE.

Stephen Friedman Gallery Presents Wayne Gonzales Works On Paper, September 1

Picture
Stephen Friedman Gallery (25-28 Old Burlington Street, London) presents an exhibition by painter Wayne Gonzales from  September 1 through 29, 2012. There will be a private view, Friday August 31, 2012 from 6-8p.m. This solo show will feature Gonzales’ gouaches. These were not studies but meant as finished works. They still run the gamut from abstract to figurative.  If you have seen other work by the artist you will recall large swathes of paint that change with the distance of the viewer—depicting topography or sometimes architectural subjects.

Gonzales is an American painter, born in New Orleans, and influenced by the French Quarter. He grew up in the period following the assassination of John F. Kennedy.  The ensuing (and neverending) investigations and conspiracy theories, often based on blurred and distorted images, were the beginning of Gonzales’ manipulation of imagery. He often uses photos he takes or finds on the internet as a starting point.

And his work, like any good conspiracy theory, is something the viewer can stretch and interpret freely.
