PictureThe Great Bird by Roberto Fabelo
Cernuda Arte (Coral Gables) showed their usual collection of Cuban artists at Art Miami New York 2015. Here are some of the highlights. It is amazing how Cernuda almost always seems to have different work from such a wide variety of artists.

Their website, linked above, is a great place to learn about Cuban artists. One of the artists here, Roberto Fabelo, was born in
Camagüey, Cuba in 1951.

Fabelo is a painter, illustrator professor who has received some of Cuba's highest art awards (Medal for National Culture, the Alejo Carpentier Medal).
His pieces often feature women with "bird-like" features. The piece here also includes a bird. One of his most well known works,Survival, a sculpture, features human headed cockroaches climbing the wall of the Havana Fine Arts Museum. He also illustrated a version of Gabriel Garcia Marquez' One Hundred Years of Solitude.

Find out more (and see more) at the website linked above.

Hollis Taggart Galleries (New York) showed this piece by Grace Hartigan at Art Miami New York 2015.

Hartigan began her career in the midst of the New York School. Her early works were abstract expressionist but she later moved on to creating work that
was pop art and minimalist oriented. Her work, after the early 1960s, is more in this vein. She is an important artist in both of these significant American  schools of art.

Cynthia Corbett Gallery (London) showed this piece by Lluís Barba at Art Miami New York 2015.

Barba, from Barcelona (what a lovely city), is a painter, sculptor, photographer and video artist. This piece is provocatively titled, Guernica. Using Picasso in a collage takes some, shall we say, stones. His work often references the historical and has been exhibited on four continents.

Durban Segnini Gallery showed work by Fernando De Szyszlo at Art Miami New York 2015.

One of the important parts of Art Miami New York was the number of Miami galleries represented (news that the show is being "re-branded" as Art New York is a disappointment). These galleries often focus on Latin American art De Szyszlo is a Peruvian

PictureAmy Winehouse
Mari Kim's work was shown by AP Contemporary (Hong Kong) at Art Miami New York 2015.

All I could think of when looking at this multimedia work was that it was an updating of pop art (not Marilyn but Amy). I don't know who the modern James Dean is, perhaps Health Ledger.

In fact? Kim did do a piece featuring Monroe and other women from history. These pieces are mixed media on canvas and a print with neon (I trust you can tell which is which).

Kim attended school in Melbourne, Australia and has worked in animation and design. Both influences permeate her work. Find out more about her at
marikim.net.

Seung Mo Park's Stainless Steel Wire Work Was Shown By Blank Space (New York) At Art Miami New York

Seung Mo Park's remarkable stainless steel wire work was shown by Blank Space (New York) at Art Miami New York. These pieces are a sort of mesh and, when close up, look like nothing but twisted metal.

But take a step back and you see these striking portraits and and compositions. It is a little difficult to imagine figuring out how to do this which makes the work even more intriguing. When you see it (and you should) you will want to look at it from numerous angles.

Seung is a Korean-based artist and his work goes beyond this one style. If you head to his website,
www.seungmopark.com, you will see sculptures that, from a distance, are almost photo-realistic and are likewise made of steel.

Hexton Modern & Contemporary (Chicago) Showed This Piece By Eric Fischl At Art Miami New York 2015

Picture
Hexton Modern & Contemporary showed this piece by Eric Fischl at Art Miami New York.  The artist notes that he called the piece Tumbling, rather than falling because he wanted to indicate lateral motion. He need not have worried as the piece gives that impression regardless of title.

The figure almost seems in motion.

The point of the piece, beyond tumbling, is that we, as humans are always in motion; perhaps we have no idea where we are headed but we are, nonetheless, in motion.
