Picture from Resiliance series (detail)
El Apartamento (Havana) showed work by Arles Del Rio at Expo Chicago 2019.

The Resliance series pieces here are melted candles. Even in person it is difficult to see what the piece is up close.  There is something that suggests painting in these pieces until you are right up upon them.

The artist lives and works in Havana, Cuba.

PicturePortrait of Lucy Thomas
De Buck Gallery (New York etc) showed work by Stephen Towns at Expo Chicago 2019.

There is something inspirational about Towns work--a sense of history and hope.  Lucy Thomas was a slave and her photo was taken as part of the Works Progress Administration effort to document ex-slaves. I suspect the image inspiring this painting is HERE. But you would need to ask the artist to be sure.

The artist's work is not all from a particular era but rather a collection of works examining various points in history, and in the present, that have and are influencing African-American culture. He is a painter and fiber artist. Portrait of Lucy Thomas is acrylic, oil, fabric, buttons, metal leaf and Bristol paper on panel. We shall part the waves through turbulent waters is natural and synthetic fabric, nylon tulle, polyester and cotton thread, cotton/polyester blend batting, crystal glass beads and resin buttons.

As you can see, the artist uses a variety of materials in his work.

Towns holds a BFA from the University of South Carolina. You can see and read more at stephentowns.com. I strongly encourage a visit to his website.

Israeli-born Averbuch, received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts and his MFA from Hunter College. He lives in New York.

His work is rife with references to scripture (there seem to be a significant number related to Noah's Arc). These two are mixed media on paper. Averbuch is also a sculptor.

PictureAnvil Study #3
Galerie Division ( Montreal/Toronto) showed work by Maskull Lasserre at Expo Chicago 2019.

These pieces are a mix of heavy machinery and fine art. Anvils and other iron accoutrements mix with delicate wires and, as in Anvil Study #3, violins.

The artist is Canadian but he grew up in South Africa.  The first line of his artist statement is one of the only first lines in any artist statement that made me want to keep reading. It states; "I I never make anything that I readily understand."

His work was also shown at Banksy's Dismaland.

Pavel Zoubok Fine Art (New York) Showed Work By Matthew Cusick At Expo Chicago 2019

PictureIrene's Wave (detail)
Pavel Zoubok Fine Art (New York) showed work by Matthew Cusick at Expo Chicago 2019.

From a distance this piece is a wave.  As you get closer it is still a wave, of course, but you see what the wave is--pieces of maps and text repurposed by Cusick.  His work comments on the nihilism of Hollywood culture and the macho world of muscle cars and surfing. He uses pieces of maps and other printed material to illuminate these bits of Americana.

These are subtle and, in some versions of Cucick's style, ethereal.  There is also an obvious link to puzzles and a sense that Cusick's reassembling was there in the pieces waiting to be constructed. Putting together these pieces is no different from brush strokes in that sense. Of course these are musings unrelated to the artist's intention.

You can find out more and see more at  mattcusick.com.

Richard Heller Gallery (Los Angeles) showed work by Eric Croes at Expo Chicago 2019.

Croes was born in La Louvière, Belgium, and lives in Brussels.  In his biography on the website they state that he always begins a series with a set of rules, akin to the rules of his favorite game, Yahtzee.  Personally I remember playing that with my grandparents. I should give it another whirl.

The site also describes these pieces having something totemic about them which is obvious even at a glance. You can see and read more HERE or at the gallery link above.
