BANKSY Out Of CONTEXT At Art Miami, December, 2012

Picture
Art Miami, working with photo-sharing platform I PXL U announces a highly anticipated exhibit at this year's show. BANKSY out of Context opens Miami Art Week at December 4th's VIP preview.

The exhibit, of five wall reliefs weighs over six and a half tons and features stencils from Banksy. Part of the point of all this is to encourage debate on street art out of context. Is it still street art once it is in a gallery? Does it really matter to the bevy of collectors and art aficionados who will be on hand.

Some of Banksy's rarest works, including Kate Moss AP and the first ever Rude Copper print, will be represented.

Stephen Friedman Gallery (28 Old Burlington Street London) presents Tonico Leos Auad's new works from November 23, 2012 to January 19, 2013. Auad was born in Brazil but now lives in London. His work, however, is inspired by his culture but also by superstitions, faith and chance.

His work channels his original home in Belém, Brazil. It also takes everyday things and incorporates them into his narrative.

These works are new pieces from the artist showing his seriousness, his playfulness and the cultural symbolism that underlines his work. If you are in the area be sure to look in on the exhibit.

Ai Weiwei's Book "Fairytale: A Reader" Chronicles Project At Documenta 12

11/16/2012

Picture
Chinese architect, filmmaker, artist and more, Ai Weiwei, has a new book. The book is Fairytale: A Reader and it is based on Weiwei's invitation to 1001 Chinese citizens of all ages and backgrounds, to come to Germany and experience Europe's innovative five-yearly art event at documenta 12 in Kassel and live a "fairytale" for 28 days.

The book is a sort of chronicle of the project and is, indeed, part of the project. It includes texts from a variety of experts, documents, questionnaires all produced during the event. The book offers a view that calls into question the foundation of documenta. It brings up questions of a curatorial, ideological and artistic nature and the problems of these at each event.

Find out more on the book HERE.

The Bridgeport Art Center In Chicago Presents "Anxious Object: Masterpiece Or Junk" From November 16 through December 21, 2012

The Bridgeport Art Center, 1200 W. 35th Street, Chicago is poised to open Anxious Object: Masterpiece or Junk. The exhibit runs from November 16 to December 21, 2012. There will be a reception from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, November 16.

The exhibit focused on making art from recycled objects. Nine artists from the area will participate. The title of the exhibit is taken from the 1964 book, The Anxious Object, by the late Harold Rosenberg. Rosenberg wrote about artists of the day and their anxiety over the truth “worth” of their art.

This exhibit sort of posits that your art cannot be junk because, in fact, JUNK IS ART. All the art in this show is made of found objects that the artists re-purpose.  There is something (and this is me talking here not the Bridgeport Art Center) working class about recycled art. I think of what the object in the photo below was before--what its purpose was and it just seems right for the south side of Chicago.

Picture
Chicago-based Daniel Baird’s first solo show at Robert Bills Gallery, 222 North Desplaines Street at Lake Street (lower level), entitled Meridian, opens November 17 and runs through December 21, 2012. There will be a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, November 17.

Baird’s work uses an interdisciplinary approach to relationships between myth, object, symbol and history.

Smooth surfaces and careful placement mask work both romantic and utopian. The idea is to encourage, viewers  to not only reinterpret surroundings in the gallery but their broader context in contemporary society and civilization vis a vis industrialization.

Baird received his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his MFA from the University of Chicago at Illinois. His work has appeared in solo and group shows in the USA and Europe.

John and Will Tracey are artists based in New England. They are also father and son.  John Tracey (dad) is a painter and Will Tracey (son) makes furniture.  If you had to guess why would most people’s inclination be to think the father made furniture?

Father received a BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts and has been a working painter for three decades. His work is in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and the Rose Art Museum.

Son received his BFA from RISD in 2003 and received a Masters Degree in Woodworking and Furniture Design from the School For American Crafts at The Rochester School of Technology.
