Fred Stonehouse At Art Chicago/Next And At Catharine Edelman Gallery

A few exhibitors had pieces by Fred Stonehouse. Most notable were those above displayed by Catharine Edelman Gallery. Edelmen Projects Presents is a new series of showcases for NON-photographic work.

The first show in this series will be of the work of Stonehouse. The show is entitled Marshland. The show is built on a new character in the Stonehouse pantheon--Marsh Baby. Wisconsin must be a weird place. But there is no denying you can always pick Stonehouse's paintings out of a crowd.

There will be an opening reception with the artist from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 6. There will also be an artist talk in the gallyer at noon, Saturday, May 7.

Catharine Edelman Gallery is located at 300 West Superior St., Chicago.

Artopolis (Art Chicago, Next & International Antiques Fair) Happening Now

It started Thursday but I didn't get there until Friday. It is not as overwhelming as Art Basel Week (yes...not the official name but what is?) in Miami-Dade but if you try to do it all in a day you will probably have a stroke. It is a fantastic collection of art and galleries.

I spoke to a number of artists, dealers, gallery owners and more. Some of the tape actually escaped being erased and some of the photographs are even in focus. One aspect that I approached with several artists and folks from galleries is the notion of collecting small art. I mean this literally and in cost. Most people interested in art who have some money but not tons can still collect. Beyond the fiscal considerations is another one; who has space to put something the size of that Jacques Louis-David painting of Napoleon crowning himself in the house? I aim, somewhere near the end of this coverage to have some ideas for the small art collector.

Incidentally, the irony of my taking photos of photos by photographers who worked, literally, for years to develop the context in which to take their photographs is not at all lost on me. I expect, one day, to be stabbed by some such photographer in the supermarket.

You will also see written and video interviews with a number of people from Art Chicago and Next. None of the videos are edited at all. As I note to one dealer that is because I believe it to be dishonest and I am frighteningly lazy. MDW Fair Coming April 23 & 24 To Bridgeport In Chicago

The MDW Fair is coming soon to Chicago (the week before Artopolis) The fair features galleries, curatorial projects, media organizations and publishers with 25,000 square feet to show their wares. There is also a 8,000 square feet for a sculpture garden featuring work of local artists.

The MDW Fair takes place in the Bridgeport neighborhood of Chicago on April 23 and 24th at the Geolofts, 3636 S. Iron Street. The hours are Saturday from 1 pm to 10 pm and Sunday from 1 pm to 5 pm. For more information head to www.mdwfair.org.

The fair is the product of local groups Threewalls, Roots and Culture and Public Media Institute.

We found out about it via Lloyd Dobler Gallery. Who are exhibiting new works by a number of artists, including; Carl Baratta, James Kao, Charles Mahaffee, Eric Ramos Guerrero and Sebastian Vallejo. They will be at the fair in booth # 207.

Terri Weifenbach's "Woods II" At Civilian Art Projects In Washington D.C.

Terri Weifenbach is showing new work, entitled Woods II at Civilian Art Projects in Washington D.C. from April 22 through June 4, 2011. There will be an opening reception from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 22.

This is Weifenbach’s second solo exhibition with Civilian and is a continuation of her “Woods” project. The exhibition includes 21 large and small scale images created and installed by the artist. The photos are of the woods in the D.C. metro area during the fall and winter.

Weifenbach, originally a painter, has been a photographer for over 30 years. The artist’s work has been recently published in Le Monde D’Hermes Spring-Summer Issue (2011). It was selected for the publication by noted designer and founder of Factory Records, Peter Saville. Weifenbach has published ten books of her work and exhibited extensively in Germany, Japan, the Netherlands and the USA. She has appeared in numerous other publications.

Recent solo exhibitions include showings at Blitz International Galleries in Nagoya & Tokyo as well as at PhotoEye in Tucson.

Cernuda Arte Bringing Their Works To Art Chicago 2011

Cernuda Arte is coming to Chicago for Art Chicago. They will be at Booth 12-335/337. Cernuda will have a variety of work on hand including work by the likes of Wilfredo Lam and Victor Manuel Garcia. The works of these two modern masters will not be all they have on hand. Works by contemporary artists will be included. Among these will be works by;

Bakehouse Art Complex Announces Family Day April 17, 2011

The Bakehouse Art Complex is celebrating its 25th anniversary with Family day, from noon til 4 p.m. Sunday April 17. The day is a chance for families to learn and get involved I the local art community. Children also will have a chance to experience their artistic interests. There are a number of activities for kids and families conducted by BAC artists in residence. There will also be a chance to pose for a unique family portrait. We do not know specifically what this means but it sounds fun.

The cost is a whopping $5 per family and there will be a live jazz concert. Kids not only get to keep their artwork but get to take it home in a BAC tote bag.

Art Center South Florida's Annual Raffle/Fundraiser Starts April 9, 2011

The opening reception for Art Center South Florida's Annual Raffle is tomorrow, Saturday April 0 from 7 to 10 p.m.The exhibit will be on display until May 8. There will be a closing reception which will include the drawing from 7 to 10 p.m. May 7th.

Icarus at the Peak of His Arc

Dionisios Fragias is showing a new series of sculptures and tapestries at Rare, 547 W 27th St. #514, NY, NY. The exhibition begins April 21 and runs through May 19 and is titled Cyclical Tales of Mother’s Unmentionables. The opening reception is April 21 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Fragias’ work deals with human vision and it’s boundless possibilities. Ancient mythology, and symbolism mix with modern technology in his art. You can see a couple of his sculptures and one tapestry here.

Fragias has a BFA in painting from FIT in NYC and has also studied at Pratt and Queens College. He has been included in a number of group exhibits and this is his second solo for Rare.

Rare’s hours are Tues-Sat 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Seth Adelsberger To Discuss His Exhibitition Bordering On Painting, At Civilian Art Projects In Washington D.C. April 9th

Civilian Art Projects are having a talk by Baltimore artist Seth Adelsberger. He will be discussing his exhibit, Bordering on Painting at 4 pm. Saturday, April 9 at 1019 7th St NW, second floor in Washington D.C. If you want to understand an artist listening to them talk about their work (and interacting with them) is probably the best way. You can expect to hear technique, concept and opinion on art to be discussed. We did write something on the opening of this exhibition.

While you are there check out the work of Patrick McDonough (entitled Opening Act). This consists of four independent but interconnected projects on the subject of fan behavior (as in music fans). There is art basted on music, sound pieces and a tattoo piece. Sounds pretty marvelous. It will be on exhibit until May 28, 2011.

Public hours are Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. You can also make an appointment for other hours if you are in a buying mood. Civilian is a gallery dedicated to both emerging artists and more established folks. They do more than just stuff AT the gallery apparently so if you live in the area, or plan to visit, check their site.
