Gallery1957 (Accra, Ghana) Showed Work By Serge Attukwei Clottey At Untitled Miami Beach 2018

Gallery1957 (Accra, Ghana) showed work by Serge Attukwei Clottey at Untitled Miami Beach 2018. We can assume the name comes from the year when Kwame Nkrumah declared Ghana an independent nation.

Clottey creates work based on everyday items but is also a photographer, performance artist, installation artist and  sculptor. The artist calls his own work "Afrogallonism", an examination of material culture via kuffuor gallon jugs. The pieces here are made of the jugs, jute sacks, car tires and bits of wood (among other items). The jugs are symbolic of the recycling, the reusing in the culture of the West African nation.

From a distance they seem to be made of some natural material or even woven fabric. It is only when you get close that you see the real materials. They are, even without context, fascinating pieces to look at . They beg you to ask questions.

Find out more at Afrogallonism.com.

Il Chiostro Arte Contemporanea (Saronno, Italy) Showed Work By Giancarlo Scaglia At Untitled Miami Beach 2018

Il Chiostro Arte Contemporanea (Saronno, Italy) showed work by Giancarlo Scaglia at Untitled Miami Beach 2018.

Scaglia is a Peruvian artist who lives and works in Lima. This piece is oil on unstretched canvas. The piece is a large one that is not done justice by any small scale photograph. It is 123 x 145 cm.

This piece may seem like a simple landscape but it is more than that. The artist's work examines armed conflicts in Peru in past decades.  He spent years on the Island of El Fronton, which is off the coast of Lima. The island was a prison island were dissidents were often killed under dictatorships. Scaglia's work is this landscape but it goes deeper into the land and history.

Wildpalms (Dusseldorf) showed work by Lauriston Avery at Untitled Miami Beach 2018.

This piece's intricacy translates poorly in a photograph (hence the close up below).  The artist uses spray paint, charcoal dust and powdered pigment and etched paper (this piece may have all or none of those elements individually).

You can check out more work from the artist at the rather cryptic website   lauristonavery.com.

Albertz Benda (New York) Showed Work By Del Kathryn Barton At Untitled Miami Beach 2018

Picturethe fever is here
Albertz Benda (New York) showed work by Del Kathryn Barton at Untitled Miami Beach 2018.

Barton is an Australian artist and a two time winner of the Archibald Prize, an Australian prize for portrait painting that has been awarded since 1921. Barton's second win was for a portrait of actor Hugo Weaving  (you know, Elrond , Agent Smith, V....)

These paintings are a bit more fantastical than that one. Attempts to take more close photos were thwarted by the number of people looking at these pieces at a given time. They do catch the eye and more than that they KEEP your eye on them.

These pieces are acrylic and spray paint on French linen. New school meets old school.

Anglim Gilbert Gallery (San Francisco) Showed Work By Joan Brown At Untitled Miami 2018

PictureFigure with Aura
Anglim Gilbert Gallery (San Francisco) showed work by Joan Brown at Untitled Miami 2018.

Brown was part of the Bay Area figurative movement and is one of the most important of that crew. Her first major show was at the Whitney Museum's yearly show in 1960. She was 22 years old in 1960. Saying this is unusual for the time is a massive understatement (both in terms of age and gender).

Her art is obviously figurative, as one would expect a person from the figurative  movement, but her colors are unique. They are bright, veering sometime into pastel. Some pieces seem to be inspiration for a number of experimental comic/graphic novel artists of later years (not super hero comics).  Her works are rife with personal symbolism as well and you have to do some research to decode them. It is always a thrill to see Brown's paintings.

You can find out more at the Joan Brown Estate website. Her family started  this in 1990.  It is a wonderful collection of images and information.

PictureBones Become Flowers
FF-1051 Gallery (Los Angeles) showed art by Elena Stonaker at Aqua Art Miami 2018.

Stonaker is a designer and artist based in Los Angeles.

This piece is acrylic on canvas but Stonaker is more known for her "wearable artwork" (aka...clothing) and sculpture. She also produces some fantastic pieces based on quilting. Her work is contemporary and forward looking so there is something touching in her use of an art form our grandmothers employed.

Skip Hartzell's Astounding, Dog-Centric Art Shown At Aqua Art Miami 2018

Skip Hartzell's astounding, dog-centric art shown at Aqua Art Miami 2018.  Skip Hartzell Gallery is located in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Hartzell has been a teacher, fine artist and illustrator. It should suprise no one that he is also a dog lover.  The paintings are unique, personal and canine-centric. the dogs are the stars. These pieces also drip with empathy and love for man's best friend.

Every single dog lover I know who attended Aqua 2018 mentioned his work to me. Some lamented they couldn't buy a piece right now. Good news is, you can find out more HERE and buy a work at your leisure. All the paintings here sell for $2500 and the individual Wall Dogs for $300 (the entire installation is $9300).
