Scott White Contemporary (La Jolla) Presents "Hither And Yon," An Exhibit By David Adey

PictureGravitational Radius
Scott White Contemporary Art (La Jolla) runs Hither and Yon, an exhibition by David Adey from January 11 to February 15, 2013. There will be an artist walk and talk from 5 to 6 p.m. Saturday January 11.

In the exhibit Adey uses different materias and techniques to analyze the notion of constraints as a metaphor for the human condition. I confess to not knowing what this means.

Some of these works involve deconstructed consumer images. He uses fragmetns of shik from hundreds of models, celbrities making collages. Describing this likely isn't goint to do it justice. Adey is, incidentally, the first artist signed on to be in residence at Scott White Gallery. He is on sabbatical from his position as Professor of Art at Point Loma Nazarene University.

There is also a documentary on Adey that filmmaker, Dale Schierholt is putting together. It will air on KPBS and will premier at MCASD in La Jolla. See a preview below.

Grazi  lives in Brooklyn. He has a BFA in Film and Animation (School of Visual Arts). This new work is sculpted in bones, bat wings, marble, roses and more. His work confronts the anxiety most of us have about death. But this isn't about grimness or despair? His work is optimistic in a way. This new work, Happy Place, is a celebration of the certainty and, indeed, the beauty of the certainty of death.

Ok, yes, that still sounds a little grim.

From When and Where I Enter-Ancient Rome 2006

by Carrie Mae Weems

Rhona Hoffman Gallery (118 North Peoria St., Chicago) presents two solo shows Carrie Mae Weems' Slow Fade To Black and Anne Wilson's Dispersions from October 26 to December 7, 2013.

Weems has been creating video and photographic works confronting social and racial stereotypes for over 30 years. The pieces ask her audience to take another look at history. She creates a conversation between history and now. She was recently the subject of a retrospective, Three Decades of Photography and Video and the recipient of a MacArthur "Genius" Grant. Slow Fade to Black is her fourth solo show with the gallery.

Wilson, based in Chicago, creates work dealing with memory, history and social/domestic ritual via multi-media. Dispersion consists of 26 fabric pieces. She uses heirloom white damask coth with holes/tears from use. She then sews a perfect circle with thread and hair creating a halo effect which is then "stopped again by the white metal frame." This is Wilson's third show with the gallery.
