Shiraga was known for his mud paintings where he, essentially used his whole body as a brush making indentations in clay. He also spent years creating "performance paintings" that were mostly composed using his feet.
Years ago I recall a show at the M CA Chicago called Destroy the Picture: Painting the Void 1949-1962. The show featured Post-World War II artists who basically attacked their work, slashing and bashing it as a reaction to the mayhem that had just ended and the destruction evident in their countries. Shiraga was one of the artists in this show. It ran in 2013.
