The focus of the exhibit is how different cultures react to natural catastrophes. Lee composes large scale pencil drawings of clouds and smoke. When you first look at these pieces it is difficult to ascertain what these are drawings of--are they clouds, are they explosions. It almost mimics a human reaction to a rea event. The exhibit also includes chalk drawings and prints with the same subject matter.

William Pope. L Solo Show, "Forlesen" Opens At The Renaissance Society (Chicago), April 28, 20134/16/2013 The Renaissance Society (5811 South Ellis Avenueroom 418 Chicago) presents a solo exhibition by William Pope. L entitled Forlesen. The exhibition runs from April 28 through June 23, 2013. There will be an opening reception from 4 to 7 p.m. with an artist talk (5-6 p.m.). The title of the exhibition comes from a short story by Gene Wolfe and features new work ranging from drawings to sculpture and a video installation. One of the sculptures, Du Bois Machine, is of wood and ten feet high. The video installation is a collection of images taken from bargain bin VHS tapes. Like the story it takes its name from there is no plot here. There are just disconnected episodes that require you, the audience, to decode them. For more information head to www.renaissancesociety.org. The Rennaissance Society is at the University of Chicago. Steve Greene's Buzzing In My Ears opens at frosch&portmann (53 Stanton Street, NYC) Thursday, April 18, 2013. The exhibit runs until May 26. Greene's work may not literally buzz in your ears but the imagery of sound is pervasive in his recent work (be they collage or drawing). Noise or silence, sound or its absence feature in his diagrammatic, abstract, list-based work. It is an interesting approach because what art is there that is judged, sensed by only one sense? We see, we hear, we feel different forms of art but when we see, that sight can evoke the sonic and when we hear something it is just as likely to call to mind an image. This exhibition is Greene's fourth solo show in NYC and his first featuring works on paper. The Arkansas-born artist lives in NYC these days and recieved his BFA from Pratt. photos by Boyd C. Ogle II Saving Souls Society was a panel, game, discussion and art project conceived by Camille Iemmolo and held at Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art at the Goshka Macuga Nature of the Beast Rountable. Iemmolo, inspired by Macuga's round table brought together a number of disparate creative minds--artists, collectors, musicians, advertising genius-types, comedians, teachers and half-assed sort of once upon a time journalists (cough cough) to talk about war, peace and the need for art and humor in a suffering society. But it wasn't just a discussion. Everyone received, in the mail, an item and a written theme. And they had to be prepared to discuss this theme in conjunction with the item. The discussion ranged from the personal to the historic and beyond. There was also a word jumble based on the first letter of each written theme with the prize being $500 to the winner's favorite charity. This was the sort of project it was virtually impossible to walk out of not thinking. It was also a place where, after leaving, you wanted to go back and ask the participants questions. Iemmolo is likely using some of the props from this in an art piece in the future. She collected the cardboard pistols that had to be aimed at whoever was speaking. Thankfully she did not collect the hats. A list of participants will appear here later. For more on Camille Iemmolo
