The only reason I photographed Piet Mondrian's Foxtail Lilly was so there would be a photograph for this piece. The image is lighter than the true painting. All of these; Schanabel's, Hodgkin's and Mondrian's are all available from Galerie Haas & Fuchs.
At some point you have to stop trying to "record" things. No more photos. No more videos. Julian Schnabel's Untitled 2000 is wonderful but I just wanted to look at it. The same was true of Howard Hodgkin's Ekow.

Print maker and Painter Philip Guston was a member of the New York School. But I have never been totally sure what that means. Not all of them were Abstract expressionists and the "school" evolved over time. I recommend asking an art history professor. This piece, Untitled (1978). was done two years before the artist died at the age of 67. For some reason this painting makes me happy. It looks like Guston just decided to paint what was on his desk. There is a good humored exasperation in the piece. It was shown by McKee Gallery (NYC). There are better images and other images from the artist at the gallery website. _Gordon Onslow Ford's The Painter And The Muse was presented at Art Basel by Francis M. Naumann Fine Art. Onslow Ford's work was of the Surrealist school. He was the son of one of Queen Victoria's favorite artists. It is really curious to imagine what she would have made of the younger Onslow Ford's art. I suspect it would have totally freaked her out. Like "WWWWHHiHHAAAT?" sort of freak out. But fortunately the dowdy queen likely never had to see the work of an artist who spent a long time living in Mexico (roughly the years of World War II). You can see the influence in this piece. He then moved to California. You can read the details in the above gallery link. I have a soft spot for the basic philosophy of Surrealism but it may be as much my interpretation of the implications rather than the intent of the original surrealists. The idea of beauty without any meaning attached should appeal to everyone. Yes, I know, once again my "lesser known artists" thing goes out the window but I finally did get a decent photo with tis one of David Hockney's Felled Totem September 8, 2009. It would have been a shame to just not use it! This piece is from Annely Juda Fine Art in London (like the Leon Kossoff painting). _Mondongo's 3-D art stood out, literally, from the pack . After all, it is 3-D and not the sort you often see these days with the visually tricky sideways pyramids. These are dioramas but not the sort you usually see when the word pops up. These are diverse and,,,how often can you use the word "interesting"? Of course Mondongo is not a person but an Argentine collective which leads to a different sort of art than a single person makes. I honestly do not know if single artists collaborated on the individual pieces or if they are each by different artists. These pieces were shown by Ruth Benzacar Galerie De Arte. _ Leon Kossoff is an English painter, London-born, and one of the most prominent living painters in the U.K.There was a major exhibition of his work in London at Annely Juda Fine Art from October through December last year. This is the same gallery showing the painting above and below at Art Basel Miami Beach 2011. His work is truly unique. The colors are subdued and the forms unusual. Go to the Annely Juda Fine Art website and look at his work. You will think it reminds you of other artists but you won’t be able to settle on one. You see a good deal written about his paintings of people but those of buildings and of nature are equally and sometimes more stunning. This painting, Outside the Booking Hall, has an almost medieval feel to it. His work is in the collections of MOMA, (New York), the Tate Collection and many others. Mokeshekwa Langa's Untitled Car II, III and I from The Goodman Gallery (Johannesburg/Cape Town)12/6/2011 I wish I were a vampire then my reflection would not be in the video of the works of Mokeshekwa Langa, exhibited by The Goodman Gallery (with locations in Johannesburg and Cape Town). I tried to read up on Langa but most of the writing on him online was, to use the professional writing term--gobbledegook. Nonetheless he is a talentes artist judging from these pieces. He is not listed as one of the artists on The Goodman Gallery website. I am not slacking, I did look there too. More From Ed Ruscha, This Time At The Dorchester' Ink Miami Art Fair (Exhibited By Mixografia)12/5/2011 Ed Ruscha is an artist whose work was being shown by a number of galleries and shows. These two, naturally, reproduce the worst when photographed. Ghost Station, below, is hard to even see, unless you look closely. You can see these better at the Mixografia website. Of course this is true even when you see it in person and that is point of the point. Whatever the artist may have intended, to me the piece is a sort of "ghost story" in a frame and, like other works by Ruscha, it has an otherworldly quality (without resorting to painting in fairies). Obviously these are not paintings but limited prints. Mixografia work in handmade paper prints and you should visit their site because they have wonderful stuff. Mixographia were part of the Ink Miami Art Fair. Ghost Station- by Ed Ruscha
Dean Byington's "Omphalos", A Fascinating Painting Exhibited by Leslie Tonkonow Artworks + Projects12/5/2011 Dean Byington's Omphalos is magnificent. It is impossible to capture the detail and intricacy with a photo in a show setting. It doesn't even come across well in a video. Yet, it comes across well enough to know that the piece, exhibited by Leslie Tonkonow Artworks + Projects. Byington is a native of Santa Monica studied physics and architecture at U.C. Santa Cruz (Go Banana Slugs!) and received a B.A. in Art from University of California Berkeley (Go whatever Berkley’s mascot is!...maybe a hippie?). Anyway he also received a Masters in Fine Art (painting) from Berkeley. His work is included in the permanent collections at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and others (to say nothing of work in private collections). Andreas Golder's Kritischen Geist Liest Menukarte, is just to the left of this sentence. And the title is missing some umlauts because my keyboard doesn't want to write them today. I would like to sincerely apologize to all German speakers everywhere. Below is a video of the piece which is more representative of the actual colors. Likewise below is Wang Xingwei's Untitled (Old Lady #3). Wang is an artist from Shenyang, Liaoning Province, China. He currently lives in Beijing. Both were shown by Gallerie Urls Meile (Lucerne & Beijing). Go to their site for a better look at these pieces. And just because I do not wax poetic or give biographies that I lack enthusiasm for these artists. Both pieces are really fascinating work--for different reasons. |
