Dean Byington's Omphalos is magnificent. It is impossible to capture the detail and intricacy with a photo in a show setting. It doesn't even come across well in a video.
Yet, it comes across well enough to know that the piece, exhibited by Leslie Tonkonow Artworks + Projects.
Byington is a native of Santa Monica studied physics and architecture at U.C. Santa Cruz (Go Banana Slugs!) and received a B.A. in Art from University of California Berkeley (Go whatever Berkley’s mascot is!...maybe a hippie?). Anyway he also received a Masters in Fine Art (painting) from Berkeley.
His work is included in the permanent collections at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and others (to say nothing of work in private collections).
