Bullets Revisited #3

Lalla Essaydi's work will appear at Ellen Miller Gallery/Howard Yezerski Gallery September 6 to October 22, 2013. There will be a reception for the artist from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, October 4. The two galleries are at 460 and 460 Harrison Ave, Boston.

In the two pieces show, Bullets Revisited #3 and Bullets #8, Essaydi creates beautiful interiors of bullet cartridges. These symbolize the potetiality of violence outside the frame of the image. The women appear ethereal, beautiful and other worldly in the pieces.

Essaydi was born in Morocco and started her art education in Saudi Arabia. She later attended L'Ecole des Beaux Arts (Paris) and received a BFA and MFA from Tufts. Her work is held in numerous private and public collections including: he Louvre, The Smithsonian Museum of African Arts and The British Museum.

Introductory Camera Class In Manila, Cameras And Techniques Moderated By Johann Espiritu

Silverlens Galleries (2/F YMC Bldg. II, 2320 Don Chino Roces Ave. Ext., Makati City), Philippines is about to run a five week course for beginners. There will be five sessions and it runs September 11 to October 9, 2013 (Wednesday nights 6 to 8 p.m., it costs Ph 6,500).

Students will learn the basics and outline shooting assignments and critiques. Students will be encouraged to practice various techniques. The class is open to everyone.

Johann Espiritu has exhibited at Silverlens, had work published in numerous magazines and books (even a postage stamp). He is a lawyer and member of both the Philippine Bar and NY State Bar.

SACRED/ICONIC, New Work By Andrea Mary Marshall And Lucas Grogan, Opens September 11 At Garis & Hahn (NYC)

SACRED/ICONIC, ew ork by Andrea Mary Marshall and Lucas Grogan, runs from September 11 to October 19, 2013 at Garis & Hahn (263 Bowery, New York). There will be an opening reception from 6 to 8 Wednesday, September 11.

The exhibit will feature painting, drawings, embrodiered tapestries, quiltd, photos and a performanc video (you can figure out which is from each artist when you visit. Both artists, despite their different media, use narrative to look at identity and the self with respect to "the other." They approach this visually via portrayals of the sacred and iconic.

Grogan hails from Australia where he attended the University of Newcaste for art. He has shown widely in his homeland and his work is in numerous private and punlic collections. Mary Marshall lives and works in NYC and received her BFA from Parsons The New School for Design. She has been shown in numerous exhibitions including Gia Condo at Allegra LaViola (which we wrote about earlier). She has participated in numerous other exhibitions in the city and her work is, like Grogan's, held in a number of private collections.

Brian Gross Fine Art (San Francisco) Presents "Yesterday's Tomorrow", New Paintings By Ed Moses

Brian Gross Fine Art moved recently and the inaugural exhibition at their new location (248 Utah Street, San Francisco) is Yesterday’s Tomorrow, recent paintings by Ed Moses. The exhibit runs from September 7 to October 26, 2013. There will be a reception with the artist Saturday, September 7 from 4 to 7 p.m.

The exhibit will feature Moses’ “crackle” paintings, pieces that use illusion and different surfaces. Moses first appeared in the late 1950s and was associated with Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles--throughout his career he has used and championed new approaches and technique. His work has been the subject of a career retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. You can see works by the artist in museums such as the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Modern Art (NY), the Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles) and many others.

Exhibits By Three Artists Run August 30 To September 22, 2013 At Galerie Forsblom (Helsinki)

Three different artists are set to exhibit from August 30 to September 22, 2013 at Galerie Forsblom (Lönnrotinkatu 5, Helsinki). There will be an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, August 29, 2013. The artists featured ae Chantal Joffe, Nelli Palomäki and Adel Abidin.

Joffe, hose exhibit is entitled, The Hard Winter, is a painter whose work asks what makes a piece relevent in the context of the expectations, the challenges faced by feminist art. Her work in this exhibit includes oil paintings and paper collage.

Palomäki's exhibit, About Ten, is an exhibition of the artist's photographs; these are mostly portraits of kids and young people that are thematically connected by their transition into adolescence. Time is important in these images. The photos are black and white and have an auro of timelessness.

Abidin's Beyond Good and Evil consists of paintings developed from one of tha artist's video installations (Their Dreams). Abidin, in the video interviewed children from different cultures and used their drawings of fantasies and dreams. The new pieces are a oil paintings and exist somewhere between two dimensional and three dimensional. These works deal with violence and how it is viewed in different cultures (and age groups).

Greg Haberny's Burn All Crayons runs September 6 to October 5, 2013 at Lyons Wier Gallery (542 West 24th Street, New York). There will be a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, September 6. There will be a "wrap up reception" from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 3.

The installation draws on the artist's own childhood experiences with ADHD and dyslexia. The piece manifests the artist's suspicion over the current over emphasis of prescribing pills to solve all problems. The installation is a sensory overload and, simultaneously, an assault on our education system and the medical and pharma industries.

Silicaphonics-14, new exhibit by sound artist, Jeff Talman runs September 8 to 29, 2013 at Marc Straus (299 Grand Street, New York). There will be an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m.

Talman's installations are frequently based around object-oriented resonance--meaning that the physical pieces in the installations are integral to what the exhibit will sound like.

This particular piece uses silicon in its various forms, sand, solid and molten glass on video. Electronics in the silicon chips, the things that make computers possible are also incorporated.

"Air Lines" An Exhibit Of Photos By Daniela Schneider Showing Now At Picture This Gallery (London)

Air Lines, an exhibit by Brazilian photographer, Daniela Schneider, is currently on exhibit at Picture This Gallery (599 King's Rd, Fulham, London). The exhibit runs until September 15 and is open from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday.

The exhibit deals with the beauty, the geometry, the poetry that can be found in power lines, hidden cables and other urban electrical connections. She uses black and white photography. You can see more HERE.

Michael Buthe's "Secrets" Opens The Season At Alexander And Bonin (NYC)

Painter Michael Buthe's solo exhibit, Secrets, opens the season at Alexander and Bonin (132 Tenth Avenue
New York) on September 10, 2013. Buthe, from Germany, was exhibited widely in his homeland from the late 60s until his death in 1994. He mostly lived in Cologne and was a professor in Dusseldorf from 1982-94. He also spent time, every year, over 24 years in Morocco. He had solo exhibits in such exotic locales as Kathmandu and Kabul.

He was famed for his installations, which combined visuals and performance.

One of the large paintings in this exhibition, Le dernier secret de Fatima, refers to the final of the three secrets imparted by the Virgin Mary to the children she visited in Fatima in 1917.

Buthe has recently been the subject of a book 2009's Michael Buthe: The Angel and His Shadow and 20 of the artist's works were included in Intense Proximity, the 2012, Paris Triennale. Installation pieces have also been recently acquired or shown by/at major museums in Europe.

"A Lot Of Art Is Boring", Featuring Steven Dobbin's Sculpture Opens September 5, 2013 At Causey Contemporary (NYC)

A Lot of Art is Boring, featuring the sculpture of Steven Dobbin runs from September 5 to October 6, 2013 at Causey Contemporary (111 Front St. Suite 208 Brooklyn). There will be an opening reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, September 5 as part of First Thursdays in D.U.M.B.O. The show will also have extended hours during the DUMBO Arts Festival (September 27 to 29).

The exhibit is Dobbin's fifth with the gallery and features new sculptures consisting of steel, copper, lead, wood, plaster and acrylic. His work reflects his concern for the emotionally and developmentally challenged students he teaches. Dobbin is based in Maryland and has degrees from Indiana University, USC and George Washington (in fine arts, ceramics and education).
More and more we are seeing excellent artists with backgrounds in education--especially elementary education. Dobbins has been exhibited all over the USA and in London. He also taught at the Phillips School for Contemporary Education where he developed an arts program for emotionally disturbed children.
