He mostly lived in Cologne and was a professor in Dusseldorf from 1982-94. He also spent time, every year, over 24 years in Morocco. He had solo exhibits in such exotic locales as Kathmandu and Kabul.
He was famed for his installations, which combined visuals and performance.
One of the large paintings in this exhibition, Le dernier secret de Fatima, refers to the final of the three secrets imparted by the Virgin Mary to the children she visited in Fatima in 1917.
Buthe has recently been the subject of a book 2009's Michael Buthe: The Angel and His Shadow and 20 of the artist's works were included in Intense Proximity, the 2012, Paris Triennale. Installation pieces have also been recently acquired or shown by/at major museums in Europe.
