When I was a kid the big news in South Florida once included Christo wrapping islands (Surrounded Islands). There was a lot of controversy over this (dubious environmental claims).

Tamarind Institute (Albuquerque) showed work by Lesley Dill, Enrique Martinez Celaya and Hung Liu at Ink Miami 2014. Tamarind Institute has been around since its founding in Los Angeles in 1960 (they became part of the University of New Mexico in 1970) . They are a nonprofit center for fine art lithography. Lithography is a type of chemical printing using a smooth surface to do the printing (as opposed to a carved one). Originally lithographs were made with stone. Now you often see them made with aluminum. Lithography is often used to recreate an existing painting as a print but it is also a process used in creating original works. The website linked above is a great place to find out more. The Optimist by Enrique Martinez Celaya and Grandfather's Mountain : The Rock by Hung Liu
Stoney Road Press (Dublin) showed work by Michael Canning, Donald Teskey, Dorothy Cross and Felim Egan at Ink Miami 2014. Canning's prints ar carborundum and intaglio and depict plants or flowers against a colored background. This piece has more of a subdued background than posted on the Stone Road website. The artist is from and still lives and works in Limerick. You can find out more about all the artists at the website linked above. Stoney Road is a publishing house that has been around for 14 years. They work with Irish artists to produce limited edition hand-made prints, books, sculptures and tapestries. Donald Teskey, Dorothy Cross and Blaise Drummond
The Old Print Shop (New York) showed work by Ethel Mars, Agnes Weinrich, Gustave Baumann, Richard Haas. Howard N. Cook and Su-Li Hung at Ink Miami 2014. Hung's piece was in the backroom in a collection of pieces that were not framed and placed in bins. Many participants at Ink have similar bins in their rooms. The piece had a price tag of $400. This is one of the great things about Ink--you can find wonderful prints for reasonable prices. Now, that said the other artists here, the framed prints would set you back between $8,000 and $57,000. The Old Print Shop has been in business for 117 years and focus on American prints, maps, atlases and artists books. They also own The Old Print Gallery in Washington D.C. Procession by Gustave Baumann, Looking East On 57th St. by Richard Haas, Canyons, New York by Howard N. Cook
Wolf Kahn's "Color & Complexity" Runs At Jerald Melburg Gallery From March 7 to April 25, 20153/3/2015 Wolf Kahn's Color & Complexity runs at Jerald Melburg Gallery (625 South Sharon Amity Road, Charlotte, NC) From March 7 to April 25, 2015. There will be an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 6.
Kahn, born in Germany, moved to the USA in the 40s. He has worked here ever since. His work is unmistakable--usually landscapes, unique color and ranging from realistic to abstract (with in the context of landscape). Buildings appear in his work now and again but it is a rare thing when anything manmade is the focus. He is a brilliant artist. To see the online catalog go HERE. Tandem Press ("The Ink Panther) Showed Work By Alison Saar And Robert Berry At Ink Miami 20143/3/2015 Tandem Press (aka "The Ink Panther") showed work by Alison Saar and Robert Berry at Ink Miami 2014. Tandem is one of the most interesting studios that works mostly with prints. They are part of the University of Wisconsin (Madison). Three of the exhibitors at Ink Miami this year are linked to universities and the Tandem website states that only three professional presses are associated with universities in the USA. Saar's career has focused on African spirituality and the African diaspora; this isn't shocking given that her mother was Betye Saar, an artist whose work explored similar themes. I overheard people talking once about how prints do not have the emotional impact of painting or sculpture; perhaps these people have never seen work by Saar. Berry's piece is a hand printed illustration from the designer/fine artist. Find out more about him HERE. Segura Arts Studio (South Bend, IN) showed work by Claudia Bernardi at Ink Miami 2014. Segura Arts Studio was founded in 1981 in Arizona by Joe Segura and was acquired by the University of Notre Dame around three years ago (2012). The aim of the studio upon its founding remains the same; making significant but affordable art available to collectors who cannot write a million dollar check. The smaller of these two pieces (Palabras de Arena) was selling for $1000 while the larger (Agenda del al Mujer Atenta) was selling for $4000. Bernardi is an artist who works for social justice and human rights. It so often seems that many of the best artists these days also work to advance the cause of human rights. Bernardi has worked in collaborative projects with people who have suffered from state terror. She has worked around the world with anthropologists unearthing mass graves. I strongly recommend finding more about the artist HERE. Wildwood Press (St. Louis) Showed Work By Michele Oka Doner And Linda Schwarz At Ink Miami 20143/2/2015 Wildwood Press (St. Louis) showed work by Michele Oka Doner and Linda Schwarz at Ink Miami 2014. Wildwood Press was founded by Maryanne Ellison Simmons in 1996. Simmons is publisher and master printer. They have an etching press capable of making five foot by ten foot prints. Doner's work is held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), The Museum of the Art Institute of Chicago, the FIU Wolfsonian and many others. She also works in sculpture and installation. Some of these have a similar aesthetic to the prints here. Listing every collection holding her work or her awards would take up a great deal of space. You should see more of her work and learn more about her (now..go...hit the link above and google). Schwarz is a German-born artist. Aside from her website resume I couldn't find a great deal of information on her. NOW, as I am coming to the end of months of posts on this year's Art Week in Miami? This is likely due to my own overload rather than anything to do with Ms. Schwarz. See more on here HERE. Graphicstudio, Institute for Research in Art, showed work by Iva Gueorguieva, Rochelle Feinstein, Vik Muniz, Chuck Close and Kenny Scharf at Ink Miami 2014. Graphicstudio (at University of South Florida, Tampa) attends Ink every year and shows are by artists from the school as well as art from their collection. The work, is as you might expect, usually made up of prints. Graphicstudio's artists often work in large prints. If I recall right they have extremely large printing presses that allow for the creation of this kind of work. A few years back we did some interviews with folks from the school and maybe we will get on doing some updated interviews. John I and John II by Chuck Close Towers of Flowers by Kenny Scharf and Vik by Vik Muniz
Carl Solway Gallery (Cincinnati) showed work by Joan Snyder at Ink Miami 2014. This piece, Field of Flowers, is a monoprint. Snyder (a MacArthur AND Guggenheim fellow). She was the subject of a 2005 retrospective at the Jewish Museum (New York City). The retrospective also showed at the Danforth Museum (Massachusetts). She has been a widely known for her "stroke paintings." These were often large scale abstract pieces. A monoprint, by the way, is a print made from a single impression by a single block (as opposed to two color/four color prints). |
