GalerieKleindienst (Leipzig) showed work by Corrine von Lebusa at Pulse Miami Beach 2014.

Von Lebusa's work consists of pieces of various sizes and medium; oil color paintings on cardboard, collages, watercolor and pencil drawings. In this case the pieces are a sort of installation; each piece stands alone but as a group creates a context for the others.

When I looked at these I couldn't help making up a story to go with them. Close ups of a few individual pieces are below.

Rena Bransten Projects (San Francisco) showed pieces by Vik Muniz and Robb Putnam at Pulse Miami Beach 2014.

We've written about Muniz before; he is a Brazilian sculptor, photographer and painter. He currently divides his time between Sao Paulo and New York City. These pieces are C-Prints. they have a painterly quality to them.

Putman is a Seattle-based artist who creates fake animals using NON-animal based materials. He creates the impression of wounded, overstuffed toys but they also have a realistic quality to them. You can see more at robbputnam-art.com.

The Bearer Of B-29 by Heri Dono

Tyler Rollins Fine Art (New York) showed work by Heri Dono and Agus Suwage at Pulse Miami 2014.

Dono may be Indonesia's most well known contemporary artist. He will represent that nation at the Venice Biennale (May 9 – November 22, 2015) via a single artist installation. A few years back the New York Times ran an interesting story on Dono.

Suwage is another Indonesian artist. He is also an internationally known and exhibited artist. His work has been the subject of over 150 exhibits around the world (gallery, museum, group and solo). Find out a little more via a New York Times piece.

Tyler Rollins Fine Art represents contemporary artists from seven Southeast Asian nations. You will see single artist shows and installations at the gallery.

Childs Gallery (Boston) showed work by Milton Avery, Henry Moore and Ahmed Alsoudani at Ink Miami 2014.

Alsoudani is an Iraqi painter (he also draws) who left his homeland after the firt Gulf War. He currently lives and works in the United States. His work, perhaps unsurprisingly, examines the subject of war. His own experiences inform his work.

Moore was an English artist who may be best known as a sculptor. The piece here is a lithograph.

Thompson is a Connecticut-based painter and printmaker. He teaches printing at Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

Avery, is an American painter born in New York. He is one of the many products of the Art Students League of New York. Other artist alumnus include; Jackson Pollock, Romare Bearden, Georgia O'Keefe, Mark Rothko, Helen Frankenthaler, Cy Twombly and a seemingly never ending list of others.. Avery is one of the starting points for American abstract painting; his work is, in some ways, where abstract painting in this country starts (you can argue with this a little).

Ruiz Healy Art (San Antonio) showed work by Graciela Iturbide, Ricky Armendariz, Luis Gal and Isabel Muñoz at Ink Miami 2014.

Iturbide is a Mexican photographer and is regarded as one of the finest of her generation. Her work deals with everything from man's relationship to nature, society, culture, ritual and also documentary photos. You can find out more at www.gracielaiturbide.org.

Armendariz is based in Texas who creates paintings, drawings and prints. He was born in El Paso and you can see that locale in his work; landscapes, animals and images that reflect the culture of the area all find their way into the images. Find out more at rickyarmendariz.com.

Muñoz is a Spanish photographer based in Madrid. Her work often features dancers, bullfighters. Her black and white photograph below looks almost like a collage at first glance; it is quite complex. Find out more about her at isabelmunoz.es.

When I was a kid the big news in South Florida once included Christo wrapping islands (Surrounded Islands). There was a lot of controversy over this (dubious environmental claims).

Tamarind Institute (Albuquerque) showed work by Lesley Dill, Enrique Martinez Celaya and Hung Liu at Ink Miami 2014.

Tamarind Institute has been around since its founding in Los Angeles in 1960 (they became part of the University of New Mexico in 1970) . They are a nonprofit center for fine art lithography.

Lithography is a type of chemical printing using a smooth surface to do the printing (as opposed to a carved one). Originally lithographs were made with stone. Now you often see them made with aluminum. Lithography is often used to recreate an existing painting as a print but it is also a process used in creating original works. Stoney Road Press (Dublin) showed work by Michael Canning, Donald Teskey, Dorothy Cross and Felim Egan at Ink Miami 2014.

Canning's prints ar carborundum and intaglio and depict plants or flowers against a colored background. This piece has more of a subdued background than posted on the Stone Road website. The artist is from and still lives and works in Limerick.

Stoney Road is a publishing house that has been around for 14 years. They work with Irish artists to produce limited edition hand-made prints, books, sculptures and tapestries.

The Old Print Shop (New York) showed work by Ethel Mars, Agnes Weinrich, Gustave Baumann, Richard Haas. Howard N. Cook and Su-Li Hung at Ink Miami 2014.

Hung's piece was in the backroom in a collection of pieces that were not framed and placed in bins. Many participants at Ink have similar bins in their rooms. The piece had a price tag of $400. This is one of the great things about Ink--you can find wonderful prints for reasonable prices.

Now, that said the other artists here, the framed prints would set you back between $8,000 and $57,000.

The Old Print Shop has been in business for 117 years and focus on American prints, maps, atlases and artists books. They also own The Old Print Gallery in Washington D.C.

Backwater Blues by Alison Saar

Tandem Press (aka "The Ink Panther") showed work by Alison Saar and Robert Berry at Ink Miami 2014.

Tandem is one of the most interesting studios that works mostly with prints. They are part of the University of Wisconsin (Madison). Three of the exhibitors at Ink Miami this year are linked to universities and the Tandem website states that only three professional presses are associated with universities in the USA.

Saar's career has focused on African spirituality and the African diaspora; this isn't shocking given that her mother was Betye Saar, an artist whose work explored similar themes. I overheard people talking once about how prints do not have the emotional impact of painting or sculpture; perhaps these people have never seen work by Saar.
