Lora Reynolds Gallery (Austin) showed work by Lucas Simões at Untitled Miami Beach 2017.
Simões new series, White Lies, is made from paper piles and concrete. The pieces are arranged in a grid where the paper
and concrete, like skyscrapers, mimic reaching to the sky or rolling to the ground in regular patterns. Unsurprisingly,Simões was an architect. As an architect (and former architect) Simões is fascinated by the promise and failures of modern architecture. The promise and failures have also hitherto, always been seen through a particular lens--the lens of white men.
Unique work individually and as a whole. Likewise aesthetically and philosophically. There is a drabness to these works but somehow that is part of why they are profound. They are fascinating pieces.
