A New American Picture, an exhibit of color photos by Doug Rickard, opens at Yossi Milo Gallery (245 Tenth Ave--between 24th & 25th St.--New York) on October 18, 2012. The exhibit shows until November 24. There will also be an artist’s reception on Thursday, October 18, from 6 to 8 p.m.
In addition to the exhibition Rickard will be signing and celebrating the release of his new monograph of the same name as the exhibit. This is also his first solo exhibition in NYC.
The photographs show street scenes Rickard located using Google Streetview. Over four years he used Google’s archive to find the abandoned, devastated places in America. He then photographed them—some are rural and some are urban. His images are low resolution and reminiscent of paintings.
Rickard is also the founder of American Suburb X and These Americans, sites that bring together contemporary, historical and cultural photographic archives.
