I am not sure if "whimsical" is the right word for Louie's small graphic pieces--detailed and haunting as they are. But there is some whimsy there in the midst of a vague foreboding. They are fantasy pieces that seem a little too real. Small in size they are still somehow large.
Withers uses gouache, ink, vinyl paint and watercolor in these pieces. She isn't trying to make it simple on herself when it comes to the medium. But they pay off is wonderful. I use words like "wonderful"..."amazing"...etc a good deal in these Art Basel week pieces (and that is a convenience..I KNOW Agua is not Art Basel!..Please. I am dumb but not a slobbering moron). But back to the use of adjectives--I use these and I show photos of the pieces. Very often they capture something of the artists intent but rarely can you get the whole picture.
This is a long way of saying that you need to see Withers work in person. You can get something of it here? But the color and depth of the pieces does get lost.
