Untitled by Josh Smith Vito Schnabel Gallery (St. Moritz) showed pieces by Josh Smith, Rashid Johnson and Walton Ford at Expo Chicago 2018 (Navy Pier September 28 to 30).
Ford, who lives in New York City, first studied film at RISD before he changes his artistic focus to painting. His work usually depicts big cats in a vaguely idealized setting. There is a whiff of magic in the pieces.
Smith is known mostly for his paintings but the New York-based artist was originally trained as a printmaker. He also works in ceramics, sculptures, books and more.
Johnson first came to the attention of the art world at the young age of 24, when he was included in the Freestyle exhibit at Studio Museum (Harlem). He is a painter, filmmaker, sculptor and musician. It seems like he does everything you can do that can be called art. His work is part of the post-black art movement. This sort of art explores race and racism while, at the same time denying that race, ultimately, matters. It sound contradictory but there is an optimism there; racism exists, but it doesn't have to, is a possible take-away.
