Diebenkorn was born in Oregon but moved as a child to San Francisco. He went to Stanford (he did his graduate work at the University of New Mexico) and wound up living in New York, Illinois and California. His work is most often associated with abstract expressionism, although later work is considered part of the Bay Area Figurative Movement
