Tom Birkner's Chromatic Fictions at Paul Thiebaud Gallery (645 Chestnut St., San Francisco). There will be a reception from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, September 12.
Birkner, from New Jersey (lives in Sonoma now), raced BMX bikes and worked on restoring a Trans Am. He developed an interest in painting after seeing a Monet in Modern Maturity magazine. His work is about reality as his website says the real world is more interesting than anything in his imagination. And his representations of the real world are astounding.
I have never seen his work in person but I certainly hope to soon. Art aficionados in the San Francisco area should be sure to check out this exhibit.
