There is something operatic about Single's work. I confess to not really being sure what that means: grand, ornate and emotional; these are all possibilities. The artist herself says she aims to cut through the isolation experienced by individuals showing common threads all us human creatures share. She has a degree in theater. There is indeed something intensely human about her work (check them out at the gallery site above).
Karolczak's haunting work calls to mind portraits from days gone by but mixed with the thoroughly modern. When I first saw the piece Petal I was oddly reminded of photographs I'd seen of deceased family from the 1800s. It is difficult to explain why but perhaps it was simply the sense of melancholy in the work. The artist works in Minneapolis and New York. Find out more HERE.
