Unrein’s paintings were inspired by a seagull feeding frenzy on Coney Island. She watched as the calming beach scene turned into a scene for a Hitchcock movie (my comparison, not the artists!). Basically the title of the exhibit refers to intrusion, the meddling in of something from the outside on a given space.
As you can see from the paintings here she blends the Baroque with the modern and creates paintings that leap off the canvas with motion. The work calls to mind grand works depicting famous battles—but in this case the warriors who inspired are looking for crusts of bread.
Unrein is a Sacramento native but received her BA from my alma mater, the University if Florida. She has had many solo shows throughout the USA. These days she works in New York City.
